I believe that the Armstrong shock valving IS adjustable, provided that a person knows what they are doing. Buying new valves just gets you out of having to adjust them. Here is a good reference:

What a useful piece of information. Sometime later this summer I'll go out and play around with the old ones....
 
Errrmmm... the link to the Singer shock is not at all like the shocks in your Healeys. Some of the principals apply, but the parts as pictured are much different. The shock pictured is most commonly found on (mg)TDs. There were issues with the design and it was replaced by a more reliable and adjustable version that y'all have.
