TR5/TR250 Gunst throw out bearing

Country flag
Offline
I'm about ready to match up engine image.jpg and trans for the 250. Digging around today I found what appears to be a Gunst throw out bearing. Don't remember where I got it and have never used one. Does this look correct and can I use it just like the original one. I believe you have to put a spring on the arm to keep it loaded. All comments appreciated!

That does indeed look like a Gunst bearing but I'm not seeing any of the other bits that should have come with it. These are discussed on one of the Buckeye Triumph technical pages showing the spring mount location and the dowel locations. There should be a short metal strap that mounts to one of the transmission cover bolts for the spring to attach, the spring, two dowels, "bear" grease. It wasn't widely stated several years ago when those bearings first came out but they don't work well with a Borg & Beck clutch cover due to the bend and rounded shape of the fingers. I first fitted a Gunst bearing with a B&B clutch cover but had very inconsistent engagement/disengagement operation of the clutch. When I did a little further digging found that Joachim Gunst recommended LuK and had added a statement to his website indicating not to use a B&B clutch cover (probably had never come up as an issue until his bearings started making their way over to this side of the water), yanked everything apart again, made the change to an LuK set up and everything worked. I think that as long as the fingers on the clutch cover are similar to those on the LuK such as those on a Sachs unit, you should not have a problem, just be aware that the Sachs unit has a much lighter feel than what you might be used to with a TR5/250/6 fitted with a Laycock or B&B clutch.
