Gunk in the water passages

So I manage to pull the MGA engine myself today. It wasn't quick, and it sure wasn't pretty, but the engine and transmission are out without and damage or newly required body work. (and I have all my fingers and toes still).

I knew I was going to need a new radiator, but this junk in the waterway near the water pump has me nervous. It was probably 1/3 constricted before I went after it with the screw driver.

Does she just need a good flushing? I hope my arteries don't look like that.

Serious backflush - maybe even deeptanking!

Looks like somebody has used some type stopleak in it!
 
Tony, am I looking at the fan blade wrong? Looks like it's on backwards. ???
 
Yup. "Cup" should be engine-ward.
 
Didn't even look at it - I was busy with the gunk...Doc said it!

No, flip your fan over.
 
It's the eternal fan question - to suck or to blow.
You definitely want it to suck air through the radiator, not blow it against the oncoming air as you drive forward.
Tony & the rest are correct.

From the drawing if you look at the top shaded fan blade, then look at the next shaded blade from the top you can definitely see the curve is cupped towards the motor.

3D perspective can be a tricky thing in drawing.
 
And you put that nice clean screw driver in that nasty stuff, shame on you. hehe.
 
Uh, Rick. I don't believe that turning the fan backwards will blow instead of suck. Unless you also turn the engine backwards. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

But it won't be as efficient.

LOL! I didn't even notice the fan. Guinn is correct, the fan will not reverse the direction of air flow unless the direction of the fan itself it reversed. A backwards fan will simply pull less air than one mounted in the proper direction.
 
I bought a block last year and spent about an hour cleaning out the drain passageway with a coat hanger...
(It wouldn't drain)

Couldn't believe how much crud was in there.

(And that was AFTER hot tanking it)
