Gulp valve, Weber carb

I've got a 1500 Midget in Kentucky which I got from a dead guy in Arizona whidh obviously came from California cause it has all kinds of "California only" stuff on it. My question is do I need the gulp valve if I've got the weber carb. How do I close it off if I don't and how should it be attached if I do. Something needs to be done wih it cause it's killing my power. I've plugged it and that just busted the rubber connector/grommet and created a lot of soot from the air manifold

This is what my Haynes manual says it's supposed to do...
A gulp valve is fitted, to California models only, in the supply between the air pump and the inlet manifold. It's purpose is to lean off the rich fuel/air mixture present in the manifold immedialely after closing the throttle following running at full throttle, that is on engine overrun. The valve is located on a cylinder head bracket adjacent to the oil cap.

k , i''l take a shot at this,

Since you dont have the original zenith that was designed to work correctly with the emissions and CAM in the car, you may have a tough time time getting it all together. i have a 1500 and have removed all smog equipment and replaced the cam with an uprated one. It is my understanding from reading this board that the cams were modified as time went on to meet stricter emissions imposed by the epa here in the states. in other words they were detuned and set up to work with the smog system. If parts are missing or not functioning properly, your going to have troubles.

The weber is not a bad carb, some here will disagree, i have one on mine and am fairly happy with it.

your question of whether you need it or not is dependent on whether or not you need, or want your smog system up to spec.

i have an old chiltons that shows it hooked up like you describe but with a smaller hose also connected to the intake manifold. Hope this has been of at least some help.

You would be violating federal emission laws, but you can just romove the offending valve and plug the holes. No one can tell you to do this because it is against the law. You are already violating the law by having the Weber on it anyway, so what the heck?

Plus the emissions routing changed every year on these little cars...I think. I'm sure that they are all pretty much serving the same function but the components and hoses are shifted around a bit in every picture you can get your hands on. I for one have a big question mark as far as the emissions system goes.
