As you may know the car has been apart for a while. Now its time to start it. Being a carpenter and not a wrench, I would apreciatae any advice on how to power in on a temporary harness. What has to be energized etc. the body is still off the frame. What is my check list? I don't know if the distributor is back on correctly, how do I know where to lock it down for an initial start? The starter will crank the motor, I've checked that already. The fuel pump brought the gas over to the carbs.
 
bring no 1 piston to top dead center, make sure both valves are closed, that will verify that its TDC, on the power stroke check your damper and see if the 0 mark is at the pointer, that will check to see if your damper has not slipped. your rotor should be pointing toward the NO 1 cylinder wire on the cap, if so you are good to go, it should start if your close then use a timing light to set the timing

Leave the distributor just loose enough to turn it slightly so you can advance or retard it a bit after you get it running. Just a little movement may make it much smoother during the warm-up, but don't go a lot until you get it warmed up and put a light on it.
 
It was when I first bought the car. Which is how I knew about the end shims thing, as they forgot to put them in at the used car lot I purchased it from. I was out raising cain with the car and it locked up...would not crank or roll start. I called a freind of mine (ace mechanic) and he said to shift it into reverse, then roll it forward and pop the clutch????? Did that and it chirpped the tires, but it cranked over and ran after that. Thats the kind of trust I had in that guy, no explanation as to why I was doing it. He informed me later that the shims were missing and the crank had slid forward. They took it back, and redid the bearings and installed the shims that time.
 
And I've been a parts guy for 24 years? Goes to show how far a line of BS will carry you. Surround yourself with knowlegable people, and you look good. I very rarely hire ex-mechanics to work the counter as they may know how to install the parts, but most often, cannot look up / find the parts (its not all picture books). Have I missed stepping on anyones toes just now?

OK - let's not worry about fuel at this point.

The distributor only fits one way, so the real issue is if the timing is right. The distributor should be basically flush the plate and the drive dog, which is unidirectional, snugly pressed into the drive. If you can crank her over with the starter and watch the rotor spin around to double check.

If that is all good then check to see if you have spark at the plugs.

If so, then we can move on to timing. If not, we've got other things to sort out first.

I did the crank, and watch the rotor spin trick.
 
Hi Andy - with Jeff just having rebuilt the distributor my <span style="text-decoration: underline">assumption</span> us that it is correct.

Can we get a picture of where the rotor is point at #1 TDC to rule out any problems with phase?
