I did research on rotoflex couplings a few years back because I'd installed a NEW set on my GT6 and they failed (cracked) within less than 8,000 miles.
It's a relatively painful job to replace rotoflex couplings, so it certainly worth the effort to get the best couplings available.
Following is part of my research. I post it again because it may be helpful to some GT6 owner out there.
TRIUMPH GT6 SUSPENSION: FINDING ROTOFLEX COUPLINGS
(Written in 2004, so some of the info may have changed)
Unfortunately, many replacement rotoflex couplings have been found to be of poor quality and last only a short time. The best replacements, and apparently the only ones suitable for use, come from the company which purchased the Metalastik company, Trelleborg Industrial AVS, Inc. Trelleborg continues to brand their couplings as Metalastik.
Trelleborg sells rotoflex couplings, commonly known as "doughnuts", in a wide range of sizes including couplings to fit the original Ford GT-40 (at about $600 each!).
The correct Metalastik rotoflex coupling for a GT6 is part number 21/979/1. This is Metalastik's original part number & has never changed. The GT6 coupling has a 6.38" / 162mm OD (assembled), and the diameter of the rubber cross section is 1.44 x 1.66" / 37 x 42mm.
The three main brands of Rotoflex couplings now available are Quinton Hazel, G-M (which are reported to be of inferior quality and short lifespan) and Metalastik.
Trelleborg's U.S. rep when I did this study in 2004 was Don Frebotnik, located in Tyler, Texas, phone number 814-398-1582. Frebotnik directed me to a distributor in Chicago. It is important to find a Trelleborg distributor, and confirm with the reseller that the coupling actually says Metalastik on it. In the US, contacting the US Trelleborg rep is the first step in locating a reseller.
In 2004 I paid about $99 each, plus shipping, for my Metalastic couplings. I purchased two pair and later sold the spare on eBay at a profit. Apparently, they are not hard to sell.
During my search, I also found Metalastik Rotoflex couplings at these British retailers:
• Anglican Triumph for 100 British pounds each;
• Rimmer Brothers for 57.75 pounds each;
• Quiller Triumph at 56 pounds each.
Return the couplings if they are not stamped Metalastik as confirmed by the reseller at purchase.
These U.S.-based resellers were been contacted and either did not carry or did not know what Metalastik couplings were:
• The Roadster Factory
• Victoria British
• TSI Imported Automotive
• Moss Motors
• British Miles
• Triumphs Only
• Pegasus
Again, this research was done in 2004. Resellers change suppliers, so it could be worthwhile to check with the above resellers again.
