Spitfire GT6 Roadster or Spitfire 6?

I have access to a lot with a number of spits and GT-6's. I was having a shot of whisky last night when I had this thought. I wonder if anone has put these two together to make a Spitfire 6, or a GT-6 roadster!? Of course Chrysler has the rights to "Spitfire 6" so GT 6 Roadster it is. If so, is this an easy project, or don't bother? Of course, you could also assemble a GT-4!

There's at least one Yahoogroups e-mail list devoted to this topic, as well as an online registry of these cars. It's actually become rather common (much to the chagrin of some GT6 fans).

Depending on the specific years/models of the donor cars, it can be little more than wrench work and heavy lifting. Also depending on years/models, a near-factory look doesn't involve too much more than that...mostly some swapping of bits that require welding.

In the spirit of full disclosure, this is something that I've considered myself from time to time. I have pretty much everything in parts that I'd need to make a 1970 GT6 convertible (or Spit 6). We'll see....

as said, this is a regularly done conversion.all gt6 suspension is needed, bearing in mind the original spitfire rear suspension is next to hopeless wheel tucking under when cornering hard etc.plus you have the benefit of better brakes.when using 2.5 engine advise is to use 2litre sump, which needs hammering out to allow crank to turn,i personally had custom made sump,to allow engine to be moved back, and made deeper.some cutting of spitfire bulkhead is needed( starter clearance) ,if using gt6 g'box the rear engine plate is required.gt6 radiator, rear lower inner lower arm mounting brackets,gt6 inlet manifold, (if carbed) bonnet, also required.diff is good at a 3.6 ratio.recent poll on tt suggested names included, spitfire six,sixfire,gitfire,gt6 convertable, and mungrel.car is good usable conversion, great sounding engine, tunable, engine posistion of gt6 needs revising though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

A Spit-6 would be sweet - I'd trade my Miata for one in a New York minute! Shoot, I'd give the Miata AND the TR4A for a MKII with a TR6PI engine in it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I did a 1976 Spit-6 2.5 a few years ago,center of hood section from a 69 GT6,good parts triple manifold,GT6o/d trans,beefed up engine,KYB shocks,yokos/turbine alloys,supersprint exh,moto lita wheel,new int etc,etc. It came out nice,if some one will show me how to post pix, I would be glad to.

well, cant do it. registered with photobucket ok, but when i try to load pix i get an error message and my computer shuts down, over and over again.que sare.

Yes, whisky often results in great ideas!
Seriously, this is an easy creation. What you want to do is use the GT6 chassis and bonnet and put a Spitfire rear tub onto it. There was one here in Scotland with TR6 fuel injected engine, overdrive and MkIII Spitfire body. It was produced by a specialist to show off their skills. It was a lovely car and I saw it for sale on eBay about six months ago.

If you add the photo as an attachment you don't need photo bucket. Just make sure the file size of the photo is not too big.

I say go for it if you have the time and money. Just my 2 cents worth even though the wife will only give me a penny for my thoughts. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Is everybody here younger than me.Please remember I have reached the age where my brain is making the journey from one side of my head to the other,a short trip maybe, but I am only banging on one cylinder, and I am a product of the 60's with all that unhealthy living. But I'm not yet ready for assisted living, just help with some da*n photos.
