GT6 GT6 Question

Ok, I found what looks to be a decent GT6 but it needs a transmission. My question is this, will a spitfire transmission work or were GT6 transmissions unique. I'll be the first to admit that I have no experience with these cars but I always liked the way they looked. Any suggestions appreciated.

Essentially, the GT6 gearbox is unique. It was driven by a clutch larger than that of the Spitfire, and the input shaft is larger and longer. Most importantly, ratios are much different than any Spitfire gearbox due to the far greater power and torque of the six-cylinder.

I would note that the early four-speed TR7 gearbox has ratios very similar to that of a typical GT6 gearbox, but I admit to knowing nothing about how well a TR7 gearbox might adapt to a GT6 engine (or, for that matter, a GT6 bellhousing and rear mount). Perhaps someone else here will know.

Vitesse 2L & Mk.II; GT6 and GT6 Mk.2/GT6+:

4th -- 1.0; 3rd -- 1.25; 2nd -- 1.78; 1st -- 2.65. Reverse: 3.10

TR7 ("Federal"):

4th -- 1.0; 3rd -- 1.26; 2nd -- 1.78; 1st -- 2.66. Reverse: 3.02

I have a TR7 4 speed I would contribute for the cost of shipping, which might be too much considering the distance involved.

John, you'll need a GT6 gearbox, but they're not impossible to find. Troll the usual Spit/GT6 boards, someone will produce one for you.

I suggest these sites, below. Sign in, post your request:

Yahoo Groups NASS board. I wouldn't be surprised if you find a good GT6 box here, maybe Paul Tegler has one lying around? (N. America Spitfire Squadron). These guys KNOW their Spits/GT6s:

This GT6-centric board, inhabited mostly by racers who are highly experienced and often have have parts available, or know where to find them: https://members.boardhost.com/GT6-Spitfire/

KasKaster's forum, small, but a great source for info: https://kaskastnersforum.yuku.com/directory

John Esposito at Quantumechanics may just have one, too.

These will get you started. I'll bet a paycheck that you'll find a nice GT6 gearbox from someone on one of these sites.

The internet = amazing. :yesnod:

Let us know . . . good luck!

Another place is to call Team Triumph in Ohio. My guess is he would have one for you.

I know John at Quantum Mechanics has some in stock right now, I spoke with last week. Mike

Is the GT6 engine close enough to the TR6 engine to be able to use the HDVA 5 speed transmission?

Herman's HVDA won't work with the GT6. That's according to Herman himself.

The GT6 transmission, which internally is similar to the Spitfire, is marginal for the GT6. Its a good transmsion for the Spitfire if you can adapt the input shaft. The ratios are some of the best going. The GT6 trans is definitely different from the TR6 transmission.

Several vendors carry the Type 9 conversion, but they are not cheap.
