GT6 GT6 differential mount stud stripped...

ok, so one of the two studs that hold my diff on my frame is a bit screwed up. it kinda looks like an hourglass in the threaded section. i do have old frame bits and happen to have a differential mount section from the side that needs one, but seems like alot of work and expense to remove both and put the good one on my frame. how hard would it be to replace the stud? can the threads just be repaired on the stripped one? should i take it to a welder or a machine shop?

sorry, like everyone knows, restorations get overwelming and i just wish i could be done with the frame.

I will likely get overruled by someone who knows better on this, but I would think a quick weld buildup on the stud, followed by retapping would work just fine. Of course the safety issues with the gas tank would need to be dealt with.

wow, i'm a new mechanical engineer but am never suprised by the fixes that people in "the biz" have to solve problems that seem so huge to me. as far as a fuel tank problem, the frame is still bare (freshly painted though) so no problem there.

i think i'm over my initial frustration, now it's time to call the local miracle workers and see what they can do for me so buildup can begin.

Well, although I've seen threads repaired before with welding I haven't a clue how I would actually do it myself - I would leave it to the true experts in the biz. Hopefully you have some local help you can pull in easily to help you out.

p.s. I'm impressed with your accurate tally of costs so far. Its painful enough for me to track it down to the nearest $1K (or I should perhaps say $10K) !
