GT6 GT6 Body Removal

Hi all.
I'm a newbie here, just posted a "hello" in the New Members Forum if you want the nitty-gritty on me.
I'm woking on a 70 GT6. I need to get the body off to replace floor pans & misc body metal. I've removed all of the body mounting bolts, electrical connections, and mechanical connections - even the radius arms & rear shocks that weren't mentioned in the factory manual as parts to be removed or disconnected to be able to lift the body.
The Problem: When I try to lift the body the chassis is coming with it. I know the PO applied some undercoat in a few areas. Is it possible that the undercoat and any seam sealants used at the factory are holding the chassis & body that tightly together? Have I missed something? The front mount areas at the firewall have about 1/2 inch of free play when I lift there. Any problems foreseen if I were to shim at this area and try to 'peel' the body up?
Any and all suggestions & help will be appriciated. I'm stuck.
TIA - Dave

If it's lifting at the front then the bolts you probably missed are towards the back. I agree with Andrew it is most likely the two bolts just forward of the spring hump . They are covered from the factory with a black rubberized compound that makes them blend in. I could barely make out the hex head under this stuff. Also the seat belt bolts go thru the floor into the frame. Don't forget the e brake cable. It took me three tries but I finally found everything. Welcome, and let us know how you make out.

I'll chime in and relate 19_again's tip: Don't forget to check that the brake line is disconnected and clear, too.

I think they got all of them. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

:iagree:

Yes, sounds like it. It was the handbrake cable that got me the first time. The "hiding" bolts on the package shelf are under two rubber bung hole plugs. Pull the radius rodsbolts out of the brackets on the heel board.

Good luck, work safely, have fun and welcome to the forum.

You Guys Get The Award!!!
It was the in-board seat belt bolts! Strong little things they are!
The body lifts easily from all around. This weekend I'll get a few more hands to stop by and we'll remove the body.
Let the cutting & welding begin!!
Thanks to all for the suggestions and guidance. I went back and checked for the um-teenth time this evening... jeesh!

Welcome to the frontier. Are you keeping it 55 Laurel green?

Dave, I couldn't find the link to a page I had printed in '07 about tub removal, but did find the link to Joe Curry's website, who was one of five authors of the page I was looking for.

Also try triumphspitfire.com and see what's in their "How to" pages...

jsfbond,
Yes, the plan is to keep it Laurel. The only thing I think we'll change is the interior color. I like a beige/stone/tan/saddle/pick-a-name color. I think that'll help 'open' the interior a bit (since the top doesn't open).
At this point the cooling system has been flushed, radiator has been cooked/blessed/painted, water pump replaced, carbs rebuilt, and fuel tank will be leaving soon to be cleaned (the fuel left in it 10 yrs ago has returned to crude).
If this works... here's a pic of the baby...

looks nice as is! can't wait to see finished product!
tan/saddle should be cooler than a darker color too...

Where does one get a Tan/Saddle interior? My wife would also like to go that color as the Gt had seats and "some" padding when I bought it.

Among other places, Newton Commercial does GT6 interiors to original specification. And I suspect that ordering from suppliers such as Canley Classics or Rimmer Bros. usually ends up being a Newton Commercial product (and they're often cheaper through other vendors than directly from Newton, or so I've heard).

Hey thanx for the Newton link, This is the next step for spring.

Dave,

Looks good, even if it's not an MGB GT!
Just kidding - the GT6 is still on my list.

Pictures, for those of us who do not have the one piece version.
