GT Update

Been a while since I've posted, but progress has been made.

I've been tidying up some of the wiring and plumbing, and have sorted out some running issues. I've driven the car a bit, but still a bit timid about venturing out any great distance. It's now time to change the break-in oil, and once that's done, hopefully will have the opportunity to take it for a bit longer drive.

In the meantime, Friday I managed to install the evaporator/blower assembly for the heat and A/C. Thanks to some ideas gleaned from other folks, I decided to pitch the little control pod for the fan switch and temp control - this little lovely:

...which can be mounted alongside the center console or ~wherever~, and which looks kinda tacky.

So, here's where I put the controls:

Looking right to left, there's the hazard switch, the temp control, a port for 12V power, the fan switch, and a dummy switch which can be used for something else down the road.

And here's the evaporator/heat exchanger/fan unit under the glove box. Still plenty of leg room:

Can't wait to get this thing on the road. Not much left to do; just need several blocks of time to put the finishing touches on it.

That's the control unit that came with my a/c system.

Temperature control and fan speed.

I mounted it to the right side of the radio console.

I have an additional 12v plug located above the a/c control.

I do like how you incorporated these controls into your console, though.

That's the one. Even though the fan unit doesn't take up too much room, I wanted the room next to the console to be free, and wanted more of an integral look. The console is the European model, and the holes are for warning/indicator lights. Larger than necessary for the switches, but a couple of washers took care of that.

The wiring harness for the switches is already hooked up to them, so when it's time to have the A/C charged and wired, the console won't have to come out. Again!

Have to run the hoses to the vents and install the hoses, and then it will be ready for charging.

Rick - I believe you hooked up one of the outlets to the defroster vents. Is that really that useful? Not sure what I'm going to do there.

Thanks, Drew. I am pleased with how it's evolving, but it's taking way too long. Really anxious to get this thing done and to start enjoying it.

Hopefully, we'll take it to the Smokies this fall.

I think that "taking too long" is pretty much the standard with these sorts of projects.

Rick - I believe you hooked up one of the outlets to the defroster vents. Is that really that useful? Not sure what I'm going to do there.

Yes.....with this unit, if you want air to be directed to the defroster tubes, you need to sacrifice one of the face vents.

So I have one vent to the end of the dash on the passenger sice, one vent to the middle of the dash (face), one vent to the driver floor (NASCAR style), and one vent to the defroster tubes.

Yes.....with this unit, if you want air to be directed to the defroster tubes, you need to sacrifice one of the face vents.

Guess I'm not sure the defroster vents would be all that useful. Did you install anything to direct the flow one way or another?

No....when the air flows through one port, it flows through all four ports. Guess your weather is different than ours...demisting the windscreen is needed fairly frequently in the spring and fall.

So it does not have a way of switching the airflow....could you put a flap in there some way?

That's what I was thinking, but there's not a lot of room to work with.

The main thing I'm wondering is whether the windscreen vents are even useful/effective. I've often found that you can clear up a fogged windscreen without them - just the A/C alone. And you can have more air directed at the driver and passenger.

Still in decision mode here...
