MGB-GT GT Rear ¼ Window Seals

The rear window seals on my GT are falling out. I think that they may have been glued in (there's a stringy residue in one place where they've come loose).

These seals do not resemble the seals in the MG Workshop manual in that they don't have a lip that slides under the trim to retain them.

Is anyone familiar with this type? The picture in the Moss and VB catalogs doesn't show the detail of them. Can I reglue them back in - and what kind of glue should I use? Also, do the one's from Moss/VB have the lip on them so that they'll slide in and stay in?

Hi,

If you choose to reglue I suggest 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive - Works sorta like contact cement but really holds when applied as directed - The key to getting a good bond is to clean off all the old adhesive residue - Judicious use of laquer thinner should help - avoiding getting on your paint of course.
Another shot is clear silicone sealant - If you have a Lowes or Home Depot look for the stuff in the adhesive isle that advertises useful for fishtanks - This'll involve applying a neat bead, positioning the seal and taping in place untill the sealant sets - Word of caution - don't get the silicone on your paint - It'll make it tough if you need to repaint down the road - hard as chinese arithmetic to get rid of silicone and NOTHING will stick to it.

As far as the seals available from our esteemed suppliers, I honestly have no clue, Moss and VB have excellent customer service departments - might be worth a telephone inquiry.

I my humble opinion, this is likely one of the few times that I would recommend a professional doing the glass work...if you have a Cindy Rowe shop nearby, they will come and do it for you for a very reasonable fee. They have all the special tools and supplies and will guarantee the work for as long as you own the car.
