GT Conversion Update

Still plugging away. I've been trying to identify a problem with the steering - much too tight and too much effort to turn. Double-checked toe-in, and it's close enough. Double-checked the lube of the kingpins - OK there. Already posted about changing out the front springs - not related, but nice to have that done.

Anyway, just noticed the steering rack shaft is rubbing on the engine mount bracket, so I've contacted the designer/seller of the conversion kit to see if there's an easy fix for that. Otherwise, I suppose I'll have to put some spacers under the bracket to raise the mount. YUCK!! Tight fit there!

But on a positive note, I did get some more done on the interior:

You can just see the A/C/Heat unit hanging under the dash below the glove box; still plenty of foot room there. Vents are in the center of the dash and at each lower corner. Controls are incorporated into the center radio console on either side of the 12V power port.

One more shot, showing the door panel, complete with top rail. Couple more carpet pieces, and the interior will be done.

Soon as I straighten out the steering issue, I'll be ready to make a few shake-down drives!

Re: GT Conversion Update

Nicely done, Mickey. Congrats!

Re: GT Conversion Update

Thanks, Doc. Said it already, but this has been a challenge!

Re: GT Conversion Update

Well done, Mickey, well done. I can only imagine how much work that's been to get to where it is today. You're a more patient man than I am, that's for sure (though that was probably never in question).

Re: GT Conversion Update

Thanks, Drew. Not sure about being patient; this has taken much more time than I thought it would.

But then, what's time to a hog? (As we used to say back home.)

Even after I get this thing roadworthy, it still has to go to the paint shop.

Sure hope the Mayans were wrong.

If the Mona Lisa had seen that interior, the world would know why she was smiling - one work of art recognizes another!

Thanks, Lou. This has been a challenge, as I've said, but it'll be well worth it!

OK - after putzing around with shimming the steering rack, I put a thick washer under the rear mounting point of the bracket to raise it up a bit. Shaft is now clear of the bracket, but just barely. The steering is as it should be, and hopefully I can move on to the next task!

You can use this as the topic for next Sunday's service - call it The Sermon on the Mount!
