Ground clearence

What is the exhaust ground clearence on a BJ8 II suppose to be? I did everything I could to run it where it is suppose to be, and as close to the frame as possible, yet leave some space for clearence. What I ended up with is 5" 1/4" at the lowest part. How'd I do? Roger

You did about all that is possible. Mine has considerably less & I would love to have that much clearance. Unfortunately, the designers forgot to leave a place for the exhaust on these cars. Note the hard core ralley cars with the exhaust inset into the side lower door area.

Someone told me clearence is suppose to be 6"
Is that true?
What is the height on most BJ8's out here folks?
r

It depends on the ride height of the car. The generally accepted ride height is 27" from ground to edge of wheel opening, measured at the wheel center line. Phase two BJ8's are usually given as 28" at the rear. Since no two cars have quite the same body panels & assembly, or suspensions, these heights can vary noticeably. I can't image an actual six inches of ground clearance on any Big Healey. If the rear suspension is set too high, there is not much rebound travel available & the ride is terrible. Maybe others will give the numbers for their cars.

Well on mine the lowest point is just over 4 1/2 inches, and I could have had that up higher for sure but it was the position that worked out best with the clearances further back. In the wheel area the pipes are all over 5 inches from the ground. I just put on this Bell system and so far /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif have encountered no problems with speed bumps, driveway curbs etc /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

And don't forget that is unloaded hight. And you are sitting on the side with the exhaust system so you may lose another half an inch when you are in the drive seat.
I only bottom when I go down driveways and it is only the rear muffler that hits and it is higher than the side ones. I think that is the one you need to be concerned about.

Tahoe is correct, the lowest point is not necessarily the area of highest risk for bottoming out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif The lowest point on my exhaust is what I pictured above, but the highest risk area relates to tire size, suspension status, driver and passenger weight and on my BJ8 that would be the rear mufflers. I *tweaked* my exhaust install and have this height, a little over 6 inches, no dents yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Yes, SS, the Bell system /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The manual says ground clearance is 4 5/8 ", (4.625") for the Mk I thru to the BJ8.

That document says a lot of other things that conflict with reality too.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Think the lowest thing on mine is the sump plug!

[/ QUOTE ]
When I replaced my BN2 sump with a DW aluminum sump, I found that the bottom of the new sump was actually higher than the original. The bottom is actually a bit above the surrounding frame members. This sump also holds about a quart less oil than the original.

There's a great cartoon in the book 'Healey, the handsome brute' showing someone who may well be John Chatham holding a cigar box under a Healey with the caption "Use a cigar packet to check your rear suspension height - its easier than using a ruler!"

I would scan it and attach it but copyright and all that....
