Grommet Help...

I'm busy putting the engine bay back together after the paint.. so how in the heck do you get those grommets to go in... Let's take the easy one I started with, tach cable. I have liquid soap and first the hole in the grommet fits the cable fine but the connector to screw it onto the tach will not fit in the hole. Lots of soap, vice , pushing etc.

By any chance are these to be cut with an exacto knife and then put in with the cut down at the bottom?

I'd appreciate any comments from someone that has done these.

Thanks,

I don't know if it is the proper way, but I have done it that way. I works also if you don't want to unhook all of the wires when replacing the grommets.

Other, more expert advice will probably follow.

Pete

If your talking about the rubber grommets used to keep your wires and control cables from chafing on the metal where they go through the fire wall? Do not cut them but yes continue to use soapy solution. It's almost like mounting a 15 inch tire on a 16 inch wheel. I used a very small flat bladed short handle screwdriver (the whole thing is probably three inches long with a blade of maybe an 1/8th or 1/4 inch across) and work it almost like a tire iron pushing one edge of the grommet over and then worked my way around. Same deal when tryimg to attach grommet to hole in firewall. Watch the paint and be careful not to poke the blade through the grommet (or your hand for that matter). Wait till you get to the choke cable especially if the carbs are already installed.

Thanks Harry,

I got the speed cable, Tach, oil pressure line, drivers side wiring, temp sending unit. Lots of lub and just like fitting a tire. I'm ready to head to the other side tomorrow morning and hope to finish up.

Where does that choke cable come out at?? I think it is just below the starter relay...

Thanks again,

Just in case: One end of the tach and speedo cable fitting is smaller than the other. just in case you haven't tried it ...

Peter,

Thanks, I got that and have them hooked up to the gauges. I'm still wondering about the speed cable Herman sent. To me it just looks just long enough with nothing to spare. I do have the angle adapter on the W58 that you suggested..

Thanks again,

I'll get ths engine in when Ted at TSI ships it...Waiting...Waiting..Waiting!!

Heading South (down the fire wall) from the starter relay I have heater hose, directly below heater hose is choke cable, then the scuttle drain. Of course this is how it appears to be installed in my car.

The speedo cable I got from Herman was fairly long ISTR. It routes from the angle adapter forward and across the gearbox, under the battery box and back in the grommet hole in the firewall. I tie-wrapped mine in a couple of spots.

Great fun getting the wiring thru the grommets only to pop the grommet out of the hole as you're finishing up.... grrrr
Always best to have someone assisting on the other side of the hole

Wow, all grommets are in and I did not cut any of them. It took a long time pulling all the wires through on the passenger side but I did it. Now on to the brake and clutch mounting bracket and wiper motor bracket...

Thanks for all your help!

TeriAnn's website has a diagram of the bulkhead holes that I found very helpful in rewiring and running cables and lines for my TR3B.
