grinding noise....

I'm goin' from a safety aspect. I'll admit I've "washed" shoes as well. On <span style="font-style: italic">my own</span> car...
But NEVER on a client's car nor would I advocate it here.
 
Right Doc, we all engage in risky behaviors from time to time. But nobody wants to endanger someone else by claiming that there are no risks.
 
FINALLY! Someone that isn't so cheap! As I've alluded to in previous posts, many people will jump over a dollar to pick up a dime! And they will gamble ther lives, or worse, someone else's that they have no right to do that with.

And the one fella that suggested soaking the shoes in gasoline? That's ludicrous! Gas is SO DANGEROUS!!! NEVER use it for a cleaner! Flash fire comes to mind! Plus, I had a fellow mechanic burned himself to death and destroyed his house due to improper use/handling of gasoline years ago! It is a fuel! Not a solvent!
 
eeerrr... technically gasoline is a solvent, but it is manufactured/distributes/sold primarily as a fuel. My point being: many solvents are more dangerous than gasoline in terms of flash fires. This hobby has risks and how you manage them is what is important.

Maybe I should but a disclaimer in my signature line that any advice I give may be hazardous and cost you your life?
 
Not that I know much, but I'm with Duncan. NEVER go cheap or take any kind of chance with BRAKES (or steering). NOT the place(s) to try to save a few pennies.
 
I agree that new brakes shoes are the proper solution and using old shoes with oil contamination is not the safest route. Jack's suggestion comes from the old school shade tree mechanic era ... like it, or leave it, but it was a suggestion and I can admit that I've done something similar with no ill effects. I do not want Zimmy to hurt himself or anyone else, and so I would not guarantee or warrant using old oil soaked brake shoes. But lets not go into "crazy liability" mode where were we are afraid to offer any suggestions outside of the "book".
 
yes, i plan to buy new brakes...
BUT ,they obviously didnt work anyway,
and if i can find what was making the
noise, i might put em back together
till my new stuff arrives....
dont think ill soak anything in gas,
but i do love my citrus cleaner :wink:

im gonna try to find time today
to investigate further.....zimmmmy
 
well im not seeing and grind marks
on anything, but i do see how
the drum could be rubbing on the
outer edge.....
i can turn the hub easily by cranking
on a lug...no noises there....
im gonna clean things up and reinstall
and see if its better....
it was pretty nasty in there...z

Gas is a safe solvent if used safely. Of course many people have died from gas fires.

Treat all flameables with care and respect but don't not use what works just because............
 
it appears the noise was from my cruddy
brake pads rubbing the drum....
i removed the pads and tied back the
E brake control and it quit scratching...
i only removed the pads because the brake
cylinders arent working anyway....
ill order a rear kit as sooon as possible,
but at least im moving again.......z
 
Did you try cleaning em up or are they too far gone?

Really Hope I've read that and understood wrong (and apologies if I have),that you are driving without the pads fitted?The wheel cylinders could free up at any time leaving you with a sudden loss of fluid and no brakes at all!

i just did a very short run to see if the
pads were the trouble, which they were....
ill stick em back in till i get my kit .....

jack they can b cleaned i guess, but
should i be very concerned about the
oil leak, or can i get by a month or
3 without causing any bearing problems, etc?
havent even looked at the driver side...
im scared! ;0 .......z
 
IMHO I wouldn't push an issue like that, Zimmy! Not that tough to fix! I would only leave it a month or three if I WASN"T driving the car at all! If you are getting a new brake kit, the oil leak will certainly mess up your new brakes! Do the whole job at once (brakes, bearings and seals...on both sides!) and be done with the problem! :wink:

mike, i plan to do the brakes and seals,
and maybe the bearings...plus i need a
speedo cable and something else my new
problem has made me forget, and a horn
button......my point being, i also
need about $200 or more!

as far as brakes go....the fronts are all
new, and the backs have obviously never
worked.....so other than the noise i had,
nothings changed......
it DOES stop and ive been driving more
defensively lately, but i do agree it requires
immediate attention ..........z
 
jack , i think a full brake kit like
from VB is my plan...although i could
probably get by with pads and the bearing
seals...also a new rear rubber brake hose....

Ok here is the deal. The only seals in the axles iare an o ring and a paper gasket.

The paper gasket you cah make from a paper bag and put a bit of form a gasket on it when you install it.

The O rings are cheep, like 50 cents at your local auto parts store. They keep them behind the counter, all sizes. Take an old one for fit.

It is my opinion that your shoes only need cleaning as long as there is remaining material. The old time material on shoes, like 40 years ago, absorbed oil. That was when aspestous (sp) was used. The newer lineing do not absorb oil. Scrub em real good, your choice of solvent but something that removes oil, heck 409 even and a tooth brush.

Brake hose is going to have to come from Tony. Is it leaking? Why does it need replaced right now?

Reassemble, adjust brakes and go for a plesant drive.

Hay Zimmy, I was 16 and had a 40 ford hot rod. Ran like stink. Funds were very short. I made do.
 
And Zimmy, as far as the bearings go, before replacing them, wash them THOROUGHLY in gas or mineral spirits, spin them to make sure they spin freely and re-pack with grease. They should provide good service even if slightly worn! (They will let you know when they do go bad with a lot of noise, either chirping or growling, etc.!)
 
Those bearings are really tough.
