Grill fitment

I took my grill all apart to straighten and clean. Are all the "columns" the same length? Mine are and there's a step in there and she doesn't want to fit back in. See picture. Maybe explains why some of the columns were kinked a bit, PO forced it? All are 6 1/32".

Looking at one I have here I see the 2nd to last piece extends down past the connector on the bottom and is the same length as the others on one side but seems about 3/16 shorter on the other (which would be the drivers side US spec).
This really seems to be an original from the 'patina' on it.

Hold on. looking closer with a flashlight I can see the 'shorter' one is connected higher at the top so it seems to be shorter at the bottom however it's the same length as the rest. Only the two end pieces are shorter and their ends are cut at an angle.

I see some differences between yours & mine, do you have a shot that shows the whole thing, or at least the top to bottom of half of it?

I don't I have a picture of the whole thing; at work now.
I think I could shorten the last upright on each end (third to last actually, the second to last is shorter already and angle cut, the very last is sistered to that one, as pictured). I could just cut a recess in the backside of the upright too, allowing the bottom to hang down past the step. Like this
recessed upright?

Not only are the pieces different lengths; but, I also think they're set up to work on a particular side (i.e., some are for the left side, others fro the right)...I may be wrong but that might be part of the problem.

Yes, I've read that as well Tony.
I know when you buy new slats they are specific "Right side" & Left side" choices.

I started off removing them in order and laying them out that way, but when the 8 year old helper started in with the polishing, that plan went by the way side. I measured them and they are all identical length, there's a ridge along one edge that I believe belongs on the outboard side but you just flip them upside down for right or left. Mine are all the same from what I can tell but the end ones were kinked a bit like the whole thing was too tall so maybe the PO just crushed it to fit. I guess I'll start trimming until it fits proper. I think just that one on the "step" needs reworking to get the height down to normal.
I don't see Moss or VB offering just the slats.
Something like this maybe, just on the step....

I did trim it on just the two uprights/slates on the ends of the grille (on the step). Was still a bit tight but back in and looking much better. That's the whole point isn't it? If it's better then when you started you win?
