Green VS Black hoses

Since I need to get a new heater valve and have to do a through flush of the coolant to get out whatever bit of the valve that got stuck in there, I may as well /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif put on new hoses. Mine (curently green ones) are pretty rough anyways.

So...

Which is the better hoses, the green ones, or the black ones? Do the green ones last longer, or are they only different in that they are green?

If I go with green I'll got with TRF otherwise I'll try and get locally since I need the car to drive.

Thanks once again!

To throw another option out there... I picked up some silicone hoses from Cambridge Motorsport. They are green, though a lighter green than the green TRF hoses.

I have BOTH in my 6, and I have to say the green ones do feel a little stiffer... heavier guage... if my memory serves me correctly.

In fact, I was thinking about replacing the black with the green since I have spare green in one of my parts boxes. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I think that the green are a better quality and esthetically, look much better in the engine compartment. But that's JMHO.

I think green ones are "correct" at least for some years of TR6 production, but if that doesn't matter to you I doubt there's a difference in durability.
Modern silicon hoses are likely the most durable but their shiny appearance may not appeal to you.
simon.

I never had any problems with the black or the green. But I think the green look better...

Hi,

Silicone = $$.

I like the fact you can get a complete kit from TRF. I need a bunch new hose clamps as well, and they are incuded in the kit.

I'm think I'm gonna get the green. I have a blackhose that has been there for about 8 years and it's cracking, while the greens on my car were well used when I bought the car and they are still holding up, but probably due to be replaced, (who knows how old they are) so I think the green are more resilient.

Thanks for your thoughts!

hi all,
just remember that silicone hoses DO NOT LIKE OIL. Silicone is great for high temperature but oil leaking on it will destroy it. Silicone hoses were primarily invented for turbo intercooler connections. If your engine leaks oil on your hoses, you are better off with good quality rubber hoses (IMHO). I plan to use industrial gates green stripe hose with custom stainless elbows.

Am in the process of installing the green set from TRF.

They are replacing a 5 yr old black set (also from TRF). I haven't been impressed with the longevity of the black hoses. They were cracked on the ends after the first year installed.

The black hose never failed but the 35 year old green hoses originally on the car were in better looking than the black set after a year.

I think it would be nice if one could get the green at a set price sans the old wire clamps as I prefer the modern flat stainless hose clamps also.

keep on.

Good point, though it would take some massive leaks and oil getting thrown pretty well to get oil on these hoses.

I didn't use any of the wire clamps that came with the hoses.

All in all, they are not the best quality and I prefer not worrying about potential coolant leaks.

If you want "The Look" of original hoses, go green. Just make sure that you get the entire set, not mix green and black. The original style wire clamps work well enough, just a pain to work with, and a pain to remove. I bought a green set from TRF some time back and they all turned black! TRF said they had some problems and were getting a different supplier. I think they fixed that issue. I now have black with band clamps, but I am far from original.
