Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where????

Rewiring the rear of my car and committed the ultimate sin...didn't leave the original Lucar connectors connected to light bulbs. OK, which goes where? Green/Purple and Red wires to the combination Brake/Tail light bulb. The darn bulb socket has two spade connectors on it, one Silver and one Brass. Which wire goes where? The darn Lucar connectors are the same size, as are the spade connectors on the socket.

I hate when I do dumb things.

Oh, and why am I rewiring the rear of the car? Well, right turn signal doesn't work and I tried everything to fix it. So, I got a new Lucas turn signal and a new rear harness (the front harness is new British Wiring). This will finally make the car officially New. Everything else has been changed. Oh, and the problem? One of the wires inside the turn signal switch had abraded over the years and grounded out every time I tried to turn right. Short circuit...pulled a Johnny 5.

Bill,

I'm at the office packing up Dale's trailing arm for shipment tomorrow. When I get home I'll check my car and get back to you if no one has posted answer by then.

Re: Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where?

Hurry, this is driving me crazy.

Or, I guess I could rig some jumpers and go directly to the battery, just too lazy. I already have extra ground wires soldered to these bulb holders.

Re: Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where?

Thanks EZ...I just got back home.

Re: Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where?

Sorry to dig this out of the crypt Bill. I remember you saying somewhere that you wired grounds to all the sockets. Can you explain how you did this or if there was a how to sheet can you pass it on. I'll send you my address in a PM
thanks

Re: Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where?

Basically, I see that the socket itself is supposed to ground to the light housing, metal to metal. This often results in a bad ground because of corrosion on the light housing. I removed the rubber part of the socket and traced where the metal body of the bulb assembly had a safe area to solder a ground wire to. This is tricky in that you can destroy a socket really quickly with a soldering iron. Use a very small iron if you have one. I am holding in my hand a new socket from Moss that is all plastic body. The prongs that hold it into the light housing obviously don't do any grounding from what I see. Since this is a single bulb (single filament) holder, and there are two brass male connectors, it seems they have figured out the grounding problem associated with the Triumph bulb holders and allow for a ground wire. I guess the 2-filament (brake) holders are the same, I just don't have one on hand. I wonder if Moss is the only supplier? TRF tends to stick to OE on most everything. Maybe they still sell the metal bulb holders.

Make sense??

Re: Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where?

Thanks Bill, I discovered a file in my car stuff about how to clean and fix the tail light socket. I did all of them and they burn bright now. One question. On the brake/tail light. The brake light brighter is brighter than the tail light,is it because both light at the same time? I guess I can take the socket out and ground it to see.

So thanks for the explanation above. If the fix I do doesn't last then I use your procedure.

Re: Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where?

The brake light should be brighter regardless. It's usually the "lower" of the two filaments in the bulb. It's bigger or has more smoke in it or something, but it's definitely brighter when lit than is the taillamp filament. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Re: Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where?

So Andrew, the lamp has 2 filaments and the tail light lights up 1 is on. When the brake light is lit both or just the other?

Re: Green/Purple or Red --- Which wire goes where?

As of now,my car being in a rebuilding state, I am teasting the rear wiring section of Dan's kit. I using a battery charger as power and adding juice 1 wire at a time. The tail light glows equal to each side and when I hook up the brake wire alone it is brighter. Can I hook up both the brake and the tail at the same time with the charger as the source. I would think so.
