Just want to let you know that there is a great article on the Triumph TR3A in the current (January) issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car magazine. It is the lead story, and there's a fine looking TR3A featured on the cover. The title of the article is: "Building an unbeatable rally car."

Classic Motorsports has a great article on the Group 44 TR6's too.

Come on Kevin, let's go rallying!

Ed - I rallied my 1958 TR3A extensively from 1959 to 1965 and still have the Halda Speedpilot and the Halda Twinmaster on a shelf in my garage. I used to have them driven by the speedometer cable but the extra drag caused me lots of cable drive problems. A better way is what I used towards the end of my rally days. I drove the rally equipment from the front wheel with the cable sticking out and looped around back towards the fender on the RHS. The advantage here is that the front wheels won't slip and spin on muddy or gravel roads as much as the rear wheels and the usual speedo cable in the TR is not affected because the drag is not excessive. The disadvantage is that when I hit bushes on the RHS of the road, the branches would disconnect it or tear it all off.

Does the article you found in Hemmings talk at all about the cable being driven by a front wheel spindle axle after drilling a hole lengthwise through the spindle to permit the drive cable to be directed inboard ? Driving the rally cable drive this way is the best way.

I can't get a copy of that issue of Hemmings here and would really appreciate hearing your answer before I phone Hemmings to order a copy of the January issue.

Don,

I just saw your posting. But I also see that Tush (Monsieur Pied Lourd, a.k.a. "lead foot") has sent the article to you by email. So I assume you have your answer.
