Spitfire Grease slinger position on a Spit 1500 axle

Curious if anyone has any experience in positioning the grease slinger on the axles of a Spit 1500? My Haynes manual gives a position tolerance of plus/minus 0.010", that would require precision tools and or measurement to achieve.

Also, does the final position of the ball bearing on the axle get determined by the installation of the hub during re installation? There is no positive stop to drift the bearing to.

My mistake: it is referred to as an "oil seal flinger" in the Haynes manual,the Moss catalog calls it an "oil deflector cup". The location specification is given as 5.740" to 5.760" from the end of the axle. Any assistance with this and the bearing installation depth would be greatly appreciated.

OK, surely someone out there has experience with the Spitfire rear axles. Can't someone lend some advice on this question?

haven't had my spitfire axles apart yet...but surely someone here has...

I have made sure the flinger/ cup is as close to the hub as I can get it without touching. I believe putting everything together will put the bearing in the correct place. As far as I know- remember- tightening the nut to the correct torque will take care of that.

Thanks Trevor, I was thinking that would be appropriate.I will simply position the slinger with a steel rule as closely as i can to spec and let the hub do the final positioning of the ball bearing on the axle. Then assure that the slinger isn't touching the rear trunion hub.

I'm with Trevor, the couple I've done have both been put together like that.
