grease on starter gear?

Wasn't able to find this with a search...

Do you guys grease your starter pinion gear with anything? Or just leave it dry?

Leave it dry. I've never seen one greased up.

if you grease it it accumulates dirt and grit and will start to stick

At worst, one might consider a tiny bit of dry graphite lube. Mostly, though, I've "fixed" many a starter by removing it from the car, washing down the bendix gear to remove accumulated dirt and grease, drying and reinstalling....

Over the years the argument I've heard fluctuates between running the Bendix unit of the starter completely clean and dry or whether to put powdered graphite or moly on them. I'm a proponent of graphite or moly. Regardless, never use grease.
