Grease Nipples

Do the grease nipples on the upper ball joint and vertical link of the front suspension need to be loosened before filling them with grease or oil?

Thanks,

Your spring compressor must have worked!

Grease away - they shouldn't have to be loosened.

Mickey,

Haven't tried it yet. I'm just getting ready for a few nights in the garage this week!!

Thanks,

Just apologize and buy her some flowers & she'll probably let you back in the house.

Cain, you may find a grease nipple that will not take grease even if you stand on your head to get a good smooth shot at it. If you run across this problem just take a small punch or a small nail you filed the point off of, wipe the old grease off the nipple so you can see the little ball in the end, give it a tap with the punch and that will free it up. Good luck, Wayne

When I tried to grease my new ball joints, the grease just squirted out under the plastic shield that the nipple goes through and not into the joint. Anyone experience this and have a fix or is it just because they're new ??

PeterK, sounds like they had enough grease in them and it had to go somewhere, rather that than braking the rubber seal. In the future when grease time comes watch the rubber seal and when you see it start to swell, that's enough. Wayne

You can't say 'nipple' - they are 'protrusions'

I was waiting for someone to jump on that one!

Though I guess if we're going to be "LBC-correct" we should say "zerks."

Yeah, I was a little concerned about placing 'nipple' in the thread topic, but I went to the moss website to confirm that is what they are called.

Same thing happened to me using joints sourced from TRF. I even unloaded the wishbone assembly before greasing to see if it made a difference (it didn't). I don't think it is supposed to be that way as all ball joints I've ever greased filled the boot. I may R&R the Zerk without the plastic disc to see if it makes a difference.

zerk might be a more proper term to use but nipple is more fun.
