Grease cup removal

Just tried to remove the grease cup from the front hub on the BN1 and the puller slips off of the small bolt in the end of the cup. The cup seems to be stuck . Anyone have any solutions from past experience on getting the cup out?

Re: grease cup removal

The correct puller should have a long 5/16-24 nut to screw partially over the cup stud. A threaded rod partially screwed into the outside end of the nut, a big washer & another nut to tighten.

If you have this puller & for some reason it doesn't work, grab the stud on the grease cup with long nose vise grips & wiggle/ force the cup out. Some variation of this might involve a slide hammer or prying on the vise grips. You can repair the threads after you get the cup out. Or even weld on a new stud.

Most of them are so loose that the vise grips will remove them without damaging the threads. Your's must be really stuck. When you replace the cup just tap it very lightly into place. It's not going to go anywhere if it isn't really tight.

HI RN. If you do not have this puller as Dave described you can make one up using most hardware store items and its guranteed to work.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Re: grease cup removal

here is how I ended up removing them. I used the factory puller but it just pulled the bolt right through the cup. So I drilled a series of holes around the cup just inside of the edge, then used a screwdriver and , with a hammer, taped the metal between each hole to remove the centre. Then used a bearing puller to remove the cup.

Re: grease cup removal

Yep Dave, They get rusted from water trapped in side the hub.I suggest when replacing them you grease the inside of the hub and the out side of the cup. Nice to revisit them from time to time too.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Re: grease cup removal

I guess mine have been out too often. They can removed & replaced with my fingers. Maybe just an iron grip?

Re: grease cup removal

ya they where rusted in. Haven't been checked for years I guess. I will make up a new washer out of a hole saw plug and weld it in place of the section I removed. Then weld in a new bolt. I don't feel like paying $40.00 ea. or more for new ones when I can fix these.

Re: grease cup removal

Hi RN, the grease cups will cost less than $40.00 for a pair.???_Keoke

Re: grease cup removal

the book says "do not put grease inside the cup"as it will cause overheating of the bearing.mine were lose also but ran the outer edge open using a drill as a lathe and a scew driver handle as a tool;,spread the outer edge enough to have them fit nice and firmbut not 'grabby'watch out for your knucles!
