I never learned to swim.
Even so, I loved to dive into our pool (4 ft deep) from the roof of the garage.
Then In High School the swim team was desperate for a diver so I volunteered.
I could get to the side of the pool but came in last in every competition.
When I became an adult I signed up for lessons and gave up after months of instruction by an Olympic swimmer.
In my 20s I learned to sail and in my 40s got SCUBA certified.
Half way into my 70s now and still can't swim.
