GPS suggestions

I know this has been discussed before, but I can't seem to find it using the search function. I would very much appreciate suggestions on a good GPS system.

I always liked Rand McNally, and it still works for me.

Bought a Garmin just before the Spridget 50th Anniversary in MO, so I've used it quite a bit this first month. It was recommended to me by my brother who had done a lot more research than I did.

My brother, and I, wanted a basic GPS...without all the MP3, Bluetooth, etc. I'm tired of buying multi purpose machines and losing so much functionality when the primary item I desire either dies or becomes obsolete. I'm back to single purpose machines.

I went with the Garmin NUVI 260W...pretty basic but has the wide screen. For me, that's a must!

I'm back to single purpose machines.

I never left 'em. I HATE "combo" devices. A "Printer/FAX/scanner" is the Devil's work!! I actually LAUGHED at the TeeVee/VHS combo thingies. I thought it a joke.

Garmin NUVI 680 after much research. It is exactly like the 660 but has MSN Direct (1st year free then subscription). The 660 has traffic updates but your get more "goodies" with MSN direct service IF you are in a service area (which you can determine from Garmin's web site). If you are not in an MSN Direct area then the 660 is a good option.

Excellent! I'm very happy with it. No "extras" but the standard features are everything I'd want.
Come with a 3.5" touch screen that's easy to use.
And the suction cup deal is easy to stick to the windshield.
I bought it to save gas for the long tows I've had this Summer (it picks better routes than I ever would...I've even changed some of my local drives by using it).
Also, it reduces stress if I get off track when I'm far away from home (that's more important than you think).
It has worked great for me in three different cars.

FYI, here is a review of the Nuvi 680 Keep in mind the only difference between the 660 and 680 is the use of MSN for traffic updates (and other features not in the 660 such as best gas prices).

The prices shown in this review are old and the prices have come down considerably. My sister-in-law just bought a 660 for around $350 I think.

There are a couple of things I really like about the 680. First is the screen size (4.3 inches) which really does make a difference. Also the MSN direct's gas prices feature. It will show you the prices of gas a various stations within the MSN area and tell you the distance to each. If you see a station you want to go to but are not sure how to get there, just touch it on the screen and the Nuvi will give you directions (voice and text).

My step mother had a brain vacation and bought one of those. VCR portion went South. The one she had, didn't have a way to use an external VCR and to repair it was more than buying a new TV and VHS combined.

This was apropos - I was looking for one for the toy cars.

I just got a 660 from a large website named after a big river in Brazil for $299. I'd have got a lower model, but this was such a good deal it was hard to pass up.

Just for a laugh, try looking at the price at Circuit City online. Remember retail is about $650, and street price is clearly sub-$300.
No wonder they are going broke...

By the way if you do get a NUVI, buy the bean-bag mount and loose the window suction cup thing - it keeps falling off. The bean bag can be had for about $29 at Amazon and is WAY better than the window mount that comes with teh Nuvi.

Garmin Nuvi - we went with the 360, but that's because we wanted something easy to walk around with in the woods, tired of not being able to find those hot springs that we have the coordinates for. Any Garmin would be my vote, model depending upon what your usage would be. The 360 holds a charge for 6 hours, but I even put a power source in the dash of my 100-6 when I was recovering it.

Or look into a RAM suction-cup mount (get the locking kind). They'll stay on real good, but if you use it every day the rubber will dry and distort enough to make it pop off more often than is enjoyable after a few years.

TomTom One. I prefer the fun of driving and looking at the scenery instead of continually pulling over to read the map.
