We're about to replace our 4 year old Garmin Nuvi 260. Map updates are no longer available for it and even if they were, Garmin appears to offer updates via download only. We can't download a Garmin map update because they're so large our satellite link wouldn't handle it. (It'd take about 8 hours and we'd about triple our daily download allowance anyway.)

I'm looking at a TomTom XL350T. Our price preference is for under $150. All we really need are spoken street names and US and Canada maps. I'm not sure if TomTom offers maps on DVD but their downloads appear a lot smaller and might be manageable.

Does anyone have experience w/ TomTom GPS's or other suggestions?

I know there have been GPS discussions in the past but figure there've been changes since the last time this was covered.
 
Get a smart phone...my Droid Bionic works great as a navigator. And google updates their maps for Android phones about every month...and they are free!
 
I bought a TomTom gps for Karen (the wife) this X-mass. I think it was model 1435. (thats from memory and could be wrong). She loves it. I've never really been interested in gps but I have to say, it's been great when needed and a little bit fun. You can buy other voices for it. Now I know that might seem trivial but it's provided just enough laughter on a long trip to make things fun. We've grown fond of Darth Vader. He says things like "...stay in formation" (merging) "your lack of faith disturbs me" (missed turn). :thumbsup:
 
Or you could keep the current Garmin and sell your house and relocate to an area that has better internet service...

I've had good success with my Nuvi, but I'm sure that any of the noted named suppliers offerings are good products.
