Got turbos?

I recently picked up for free 6 used KKK turbos that came from the VW Audi 1.8 turbo cars. They are capable of pushing enough air to make around 200 HP each. I'm playing with the idea of putting a couple on a TR8. I can handle the fabrication aspect, but I need a game plan. I think the coolest route would be to mount them low and unseen below either the stock exhaust manifolds or a set of MGB V8 style shorty headers, and somehow utilize the stock intake manifold and Zenith carbs. Does anybody know if you can pressurize the Zenith or SU carbs? I've seen plenty of Turbo pics utilizing an SU in a pull thru configuration. I know the ultimate power gains would be with a fuel injection set up and an engine management system, but I'm thinking cheap, low tech, and stealth. How cool would it be to push 300 HP out of a stock looking TR8 engine bay. Any thoughts? What does Lotus use?

Hey Todd,

Check out Lee's site . It's not a tr8 but there's lots of good info there. I've been planning something simmilar for several years on my TR6 (only up to about 150 hp though), just haven't had the funds lately. You might want to check out how much power the TR8 driveline can take before it disintergrates. You might have to do some upgrades there.

What size of turbos are they? Used turbos are quite rare around here as all the tuner guys snap them up right away. I'd be interested in taking a couple of them off your hands if you feel that you have too many!

Cheers.

The KKK is a nice little turbo. Got one on my Audi TT 1.8 Stage II chipped with a Garret ECU. They have a very smooth, wide HP band without the lag you get from larger blowers. I think you'd need FI and an engine management system to tune them correctly.

I know it's not a Triumph but ..

The car I want to put the turbos on has a Ford 31 spline posi 8.8 rear in it, with a driveshaft capable of handling more than 400 pound/feet of torque. The weak link will be the TR8 tranny, but there are a few TR8s around here with close to 300 HP at the wheels running the stock gear box. I know the megasquirt way is the high tech foolproof method. That was my original plan. I was going to build a 4.0 liter, buy a management system, and use the Rover fuel injection intake. That sounds like alot of money and effort. I would like to keep this low tech and cheap- at least until I blow something up. I found a great article on triumphexperience.com about blow thru turbos utilizing an SU. Answered all of my questions and makes it seem pretty simple. Apparently it works rather well, and there were several after market kits made in the 80's that went the blow thru SU route. I should be able to make something up with the junk I got laying around here. Now I just need some spare time to play with it.
