Got the Itch.

To build another engine. Just debating on what to build. Another killer 1275 sounds fun, but may do a spare six for the 'Rumph. Or a 948, just for giggles.
Any thoughts? (Silly question, I know! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif )
Jeff

dont suppose you have a recipe for a 1500? i have one to start this weekend.

mark

Got a good recipe, Mark, but it wouldn't be very streetable. Or economical. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
Jeff

Jeff
yea it kinda needs to be streetable....i was thinking a spit cam, and .02 bore this gent would like a pair of su's, but i need to find a manifold with a set of carbs, quantum has some on the site. i have some dough to play with. i think i can build this gent something fairly decent. thing is....do i build it better than mine?

You could always do one of each, if your itch is that bad

mark

Mark, just kind of noodling around right now.
There are some decent options available for the 1500, but it isn't the cheapest LBC engine to build. APT has a couple of pretty nice cams available, but one word of caution. Don't try to go cheap on the lifters!!! There are some real losers out there, and they'll destroy a new cam in a matter of seconds. I'm sure you're aware of that, as it's been mentioned here by many, including Hap and myself.
Knock about .080" from the head, balance the chambers, and that will help. Why only go .020" on the bore? 40 over won't cost any more for the machine work or pistons.
You can change over to the dual row timing chain for reliability. The TR6 chain and gearset fit, you just have to replace the tensioner with the wider version.
The 1500 has fairly decent ports as stock, but a little cleanup may be in order. I've found a lot of speed bumps in the port castings, that are easily removed. Gasket matching never hurts, either.
I'm a firm believer in ARP hardware throughout, particularlly on the rod bolts. That's a weak link on the diagonally split rods, and I have a stack of buckshotted oil pans to prove it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
A set of HS4's should wake it up!
Good luck.
Jeff

KILLER 1275!!!

I suppose you will want it returned when I'm finished, Barry? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Let's see: 13:1, Billet crank, Carillo rods, Cosworth pistons, have David Vizard do the head, Dry sumped, twin HS4's.
That be enough for you?
Jeff

EEOWWW!!! My wallet pucker'd up at about "Carillo rods" and clamped down so hard my butt's NUMB now!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

That'll do nicely. Thanks Jeff!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
I can drop it off saturday afternoon.
The check will be in the mail....

Gee, Barry, I'll be at the track all day Saturday. Just leave it on the porch. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
Jeff

When you're done with Barry's you can start in on mine... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Drew, I wouldn't want to deprive you of any fun. Now, if you buy the GT6, I may put one together for you. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
Trip Webers OK?
Jeff

Tempting, Jeff, tempting. That GT6 got too rich for me, though.

...i think you're gonna need multiple engine stands... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Doc, I've GOT multiple stands. I just need to decide on which to do. No turbo or blower, though. I'm a naturally aspirated kind of guy. I've got one 1275 sitting here that I could finish in a weekend. +.040" flat tops, fully done big valve head, lightened lower end, Al. flywheel, etc. Just need to get the roller rockers, do final assembly, and it's set. That's why I'm undecided on which way to go. Maybe I'll just yank the engine in the Fiat and freshen it up.
Decisions, decisions!
Jeff

Finish the easy one first and put it aside as a spare then work on the others.

Yeah....I have a 1275 I pulled from the RWA parts car I bought a while back. I need to put it in so that my car is properly vintage-legal (right now they're letting me "skate" on the rules a bit).
The motor looks good but I'll do a basic rebuilt (re-bored, pistons, bearings, cut crank, lightened flywheel, etc). I'll build it very mild; just a mid-range cam, HS2s, and an old header I have on hand. I'll never take it north of 6300 RPM so mild will do me fine.
I'm not sure if I'll have the 1275 ready for the Pittsburgh Vintage so I'll probably run the 1500 in that event. The brown truck brought some Toyo Proxe RA1s yesterday, so I'm pretty well set.

But the RWA parts car isn't too bad, so I'll drop the 1500 in it. Kind of a weird thing to do but it's easy and the 1500 runs fine. It'll sort of be an MG Rat-Rod street deal.

And this week I finally got the engine, trans and suspension all out of the parts car for my Escort GT club racer project (I rolled it into onto my trailer and then pulled all the suspension).
I took the parts car to the junkyard this morning...the junkie said it looked like a turkey three days after Thanksgiving! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Well, I just ran the total on what it's gonna cost me to put together a 1275 the way I want. GULP!! This one may have to go on the back burner for awhile.
I guess it's time to finish up the other one. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
