Got the Bently Beckoning Blues

Waiting for my Bently repair manual to come before
I begin the tear-down of the engine on the ole TR6.

I ordered this thing a long, long time ago and sill hear
it is on back order. Don't think I want to start
without it.

Ordered from one of the Big Three. When I get the
manual, I suppose I'll be out of excuses. Sure would like
to get it fixed by Spring.

While you wait, clean, clean, clean. You can also organize for the tear down. Bags, labels, boxes, tools...
Simple things like the oil pan, rocker shaft, etc.
Disassembly is easy. The main concern is to loosen the head studs in 10-20 lb. increments in the order they are tightened so not to warp the head.
If you get in over your head, you are a forum away from hundreds of manuals.
Good luck and have fun.

I have a factory repair manual on CD ROM. Problem
is that since updating to the latest version of
Windows Vista (had to do this because all new computers
are shipped this way,) my computer does not open the
software. I do have a computer to use but it is
a bit onerous, as it is an old but good business
computer and is busy most of the time. Also, the software vendor precludes things like copying of and/or sending files, etc.

Reading from the Forum suggests to me that the book to
have is the Bently Manual. Based on using he CD ROM
version, I am hoping the Bently will prove better.

Guess I should have ordered the book version. Suppose
I could look into a different repair manual in written
form other than the Bently. Any suggestions?

Haynes manuals are available on eBay all the time. Someone is selling new ones there. You might be able to get them elsewhere, too. I haven't started taking my engine apart yet so I haven't used it for the TR6. However, I've used Haynes for a number of other cars and they have been good.

2wrench - I'm interested in your Vista problem. Could I PM you to get some details? There's got to be a "user friendly" way of looking at that CD.

It doesn't help you unless you can cancel the order, but for manuals I've always had success with https://www.books4cars.com

<edit> I just realised that I have a spare one also. I got one with the TVR (TR6 engine remember), and I have 2 others - an indoors one and a shop one. It looks brand new, unlike my shop one /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif If anyone wants one, $40 gets it - at that price I'll throw in the shipping - just pm me.

I would continue to watch ebay even after you get your Bentley manual. It is beneficial to have more than one type. Some have better pictures; and some do a better job of explaining. There are a lot of shop manuals for the TR6.

Amazon used to have the Bentley manual for about $38 shipped, but looks like they are out of stock now. They do have the Brooklands manual, which I think is the same as the BL manual, (Bentley has the owner's handbook at the start). Not sure if just pasting a link works, but it might...

https://www.amazon.com/Triumph-Workshop-M...6695758&sr=1-11

TRF also has (had?) the old stock bought from BL dealers - part number AKM3529C. I think this is for the later TR6 and may not cover earlier features (A type O/D?). I bought one as a spare when they were on sale - I seem to remember it was not much over $30.

Hope that is some help.
Alistair

I have it on a PDF if your interested. I can send to you but will take a couple of days to get to you .

If you can get your hands on an original-style blue Bentley manual you will be better off than with the reprint version (white). There is a lot of info in the original that has been left out of the condensed white one. All the tech stuff is there but a lot of the other listings were eliminated.

Sure, Tom. Personal message and we'll chat about it.
I can appreciate the vendor protecting their software;
but, I think it has more to do with Vista leaving behind
their latest software version, which for me was
Windows XP. Been patient, but Microsoft just must not
be seeing this issue as big enough a fish to fry.

Alan, I sent a PM regarding where to send the manual. Thanks. Is the manual you offer different from the
Bently or is this the same? I followed your lead to the
web site you suggested and it looks as though it may be
possible to order a Bently, though I could be suprised to
learn it is on back order again. I am thinking to obtain
more than one resource, cause I'll likely need all the
help/reference I can muster.

I have both the Bentley and the shop manual. The website I linked to offers the shop manual afaik - that's what I bought from them anyway.

I was talking about the blue Bentley manual. ISBN 0-8376-0108-8

When you guys talk about the Bently manual, is that a reprint of the origninal factory manual?

Yup. "Bentley" is actually a publisher, the book referenced above is the "Complete Official TR6" which is a reprint of several factory manuals; available for several different Triumphs. AFAIK all of them have the workshop & driver's manual; some (like the TR4 version) also have the competition manual.

Oops, looks like the "Complete Official TR3" and CO TR4 books are out of print. But you might find a copy on eBay or a used bookstore. Abebooks wants $125 for a used TR3 version, though, so I guess they are getting scarce.

Randall,

I just went to that site to look at the Complete TR6 Manual. I checked the page on this link: https://www.bentleypublishers.com/gallery.htm?code=x119&seqnum=5

and it's exactly the same as my Factory TR6 Manual, page 86-10-08.

From what they say, these reprints of the same. Or is there more that is important in these in other sections?

If it's just the reprint with an owners manual, you can buy the same (less the owners manual) service manual at TRF for $39.97 here:

I'm probably the wrong person to respond, since I don't actually have a copy of the TR6 Bentley (yet).

But from looking at the material on the Bentley site, I would guess it contains sections from both the early and late TR6 manual, so covers, for example, both A- and J- type overdrives. Should mean it also covers the external regulator alternator used on the TR250 as well as the various internal versions used on TR6.

Since you have a later TR6, then I'd agree that the later shop manual TRF sells (plus an owner's manual for a US-spec 74 TR6) would be better (and a little cheaper) for you.
https://www.zeni.net/trf/TR6-250GC/264.php

Don't know if the TR6 is the same, but for the Stag, the later workshop manual deleted a lot of good information for the early cars. Still has the alternator and OD sections, but deleted things like pinouts for the harness connectors and logic diagrams for the switches. And unlike the TR6, the factory claimed the later manual covered all Stags.

I already bought the purple Owners Manual when I bought my Service Manual. At about 35% less, but that was about 6 or 7 years ago. So I guess that the sale price today is fair, since it's about what I paid full price back then.
