Got pulled over Sunday.....

I was on my way home from the gas station with some fuel for the law mower in my 78B when the unthinkable happened.

I’m sitting at a light when I get a phone call from my boss. I answered it at the same moment as the left hand arrow light turned green. Well I must’ve been distracted for a moment because I totally wasn’t paying attention to my speed as I made my turn.

After completing the turn I put her in third to cruise home. Well just as the phone call ends I notice a black & white about a block and a half up ahead on the right. Now I’m not alarmed as I’ve seen the Sheriff department do this before – as that’s where they like to park and use the radar to catch speeders. I swear I thought I was in the clear because I was doing maybe 25ish when I spotted him.

As I pass the officer I waved and he flagged me by & pulled out behind me with the red lights flashing. I seriously didn’t think I did anything wrong, so when I pulled over I asked “what I did?” That’s when he showed me the radar gun that had “37MPH” flashing. I was totally floored….

Anyway the guy was pretty cool about the whole thing and just asked me to slow down and cut me lose with a verbal warning.

I swear I didn’t think I was going that fast so I think he must’ve caught me as I was making the turn but that was almost two blocks away? But I didn’t think that the radar gun had that kind of range. That or my speed-o is WAY off.

You bet I’m counting my blessings - but I’m going to get that speedometer checked the first chance I get.

Not to imply an error on your part, this is simply a general statement. Cell phones have a way of distracting even the most attentive drivers to the point that they do things they would normally scorn others for. It's possible you had no idea what speed you were really going along that street, even if you're confident you were watching the speedometer. I've been there myself, which is why I never talk on the phone while driving no matter who is calling.

Hey Steve,

I'm the last person who wouldn't admit that he did something wrong while driving. I mean after all at ~37mph he did clock me at one & a half the posted speed limit (you do the math /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif ) - the cop should've pulled me over.

Honestly I normally don’t talk on the phone (hands free or not) when I’m in the MG or the Porsche because it’s just too much with a manual butter churner. But when cursing down the road in my truck (automatic) I’ve never had any problems. However what happened here was that I knew my boss was calling about an ongoing problem at work and anticipating his call I answered it thinking I had time before the light changed to green.

I misjudged the situation and would have taken the ticket had the officer decided to issue one. Funny thing is I live a few hundred yards away from where he pulled me over and watched the same officer pull over about 6 more folks and in each case he wrote them a ticket.

Again I’m counting my blessings.

Bret, tell your boss to get a life and stop bothering you on your day off. LOL

LOL! I'm not going to blame my boss for this. I messed up.

Besides it’s one of the annoying little aspects of my job.

Next time, return his call via the voicemail or text message he can leave, knowing that you're not available to talk in person.

I'm with you on that, Rick. i don't care how "important" the caller thinks the call is. If they can't wait a few minutes for me to pull over and return the call, then they need to find a less stressful job!

Remember just 15 years ago when it was impossible to contact someone when they were away from a land line telephone? It seems the world has become completely dependent on mobile phones over night!

I have people complaining to me all the time that they couldn't get a hold of me, because I left my cell phone at home for 30 minutes while I went to the corner store. It's kind of a sad state this would is currently in.

Texting is probably the worst thing to do. Heck of a lot more distracting than just talking on the phone.

Again I know what I did was wrong and I wouldn't of had a leg to stand on had the cop issued a ticket for speeding.

I don't have a problem banning the use of cell phones, but have to wonder if I’d be the only one abiding by the law if they did. I’ve traveled into states where they’re suppose to be illegal without a hands free device but I still see folks driving around with their hand firmly cradling a phone next to their ear.

Still I must say with all the “other” driver distractions a hands free setup is a heck of a lot less distracting than some of the things I see.

Rowdy & unruly kids, super loud sound & multi media systems that deify all logic. Eating, reading the newspaper or book. Gals doing their make up and guys shaving on their way to work. I witnessed an accident a few years ago where the driver hit a parked car on the side of the road at about ~35mph! When the cops asked what happened he told them that he’d only looked away for a second. When they asked what made him look away he said he was changing the station on his stereo.

Nope! Don’t think anybody’ll ever convince me that those things aren’t just as distracting as punching in a phone number on the keys of a cell phone.

I tend to get faster when cursing down the road. "That %#&(&&%$ cut me off!!!" /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Two simple solutions:

1.Open window,throw cell phone out.

2.Turn off cell phone,& turn it on when you get home.

That's what I would have to be doing in my Sprite to be going 37MPH "totally floored"! LOL
