Got my Sunnen book today

This one?

Sunnen, Manufacturer of automotive engine rebuilding products, including bore finishing machines, honing tools, and abrasives.

The Sunnen book, is a text style book, Sunnen is one of the major manufactuers of automotive machining equipment. The book covers everything from how a 4 stroke engine works to various maching processes and how to use various Sunnen equipment. While most of you may never for example own a Sunnen cap grinder or rod honing machine this book will educate you on what machining operations are needed in a engine rebuild and teach you what to ask for when going to the machine shop. Over time on these forums I see alot of folks comment on items like rod resizing for example and not knowing what it is and how it is done, this book answers those type of questions. I tried to help teach a tech school course on engine rebuilding and I felt this was the goal of our class, to teach people how to dis-assemble an engine and inspect it, know what to ask for when they went to the machine shop and to know how to measure everything, check behind the machinist for proper clearences and assemble the engine with confidence.

What separates the one time backyard builder from the pro is understanding and knowing how to determine what sizes everything should be and being able to measure and see that they are in fact that, this book will get you closer to the pros.

I got the recommendation for this book from Hap. I'm about 1/2 way through chapter 2 now. All very basic how-an-engine-works stuff so far, which is a nice foundation. I think I'm understanding valve timing now, so I've already learned something.

i'm through a couple of chapters in vizard and liked the discussion on air filter design and importance. i would have preferred more discussion on the efficiency of stock filters and enclosures like on my 67, but the overall concept was not lost. when you read this type material it can be applied to my daily driver as well which is nice. i'm on ram pipes now, sooo i might start dozing off a little /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

So much to learn, so little time. Thank goodness for folks like Hap who share their hard won knowledge.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif I'd be lost without the folks here.

Plenty of time here, though. The long winter has started here. 14 degrees (F) this morning. Good time to be indoors reading up on engines and other good stuff!

Sunnen's Complete Cylinder Head and Engine Rebuilding Handbook

Got mine off eBay for $35. It's out of print, but copies are still out there. Mine was brand new, still in the plastic wrapper.

And another word to the wise. If it's within your capabilities, always check everything after machining. Even the best mess up occasionally, and the time to catch it is prior to assembly, not by the side of the road as you're watching the smoke roll out of the hole in the block.
Jeff

Go behind and check everything TWICE. A good set of micrometers (I.D. and O.D.) and pin gauges are an ~investment~! And supplying your machinist with spec's from BOOKS on the particular unit he'll be cutting on is no 'bad thing' either. He'll likely thank you for it.

...at least that's been MY experience.
