That surround fit pretty tight. Then the grill was even tighter.

Here it is as it stands now. I've got work to do on my slatted grille so this one will do for a while.

That rocks.

For quite a while I was tossing the idea of reworking the openings so that they were very smooth and wouldn't need the flashing. I was thinking it might look good with smooth painted panels rolling inward towards the grille.

I ended up buying a set of flashing out of a 70's MG on ebay for 28 bucks shipped. It was dent free but rough. So I stripped all the paint off and the pitting off of it. It took 120 grit sandpaper and paint remover to get it where it was presentable. I worked the finishing up to 280 grit and then used a 400 grit Scotch brite (red pad) and it comes out with a nice brushed finish.

I also have a brand new set of finishing. I thought I lost some of my pieces and I ended up ordering an entire new set (60's style trhats anodized and unpainted). I ended up finding all my flashing, but I'm kinda leading towards my raw looking low buck handworked pieces.

Looks great! I bought a new set too as my original was really beat up. Did you use stainless rivets to hold it in?
 
I'll be taking it all out again soon so for the time being I used aluminum screws.

One side fits much better than the other, I was a bit afraid to try forcing that side. So I plan to disassemble it when I get my slatted grille finished up. I don't know what I will use for fasteners at that point. Most likely stainless screws.

I think it looks great.
 
On my car, there is an imperfection in the right fender that kept the flashing from fitting properly. There's an indentation in the fender also, as the flashing seemed to have a gap. I ground the imperfection down on the fender and the flashing fits much better. I may take some fiberglass filler and work out the indentation. It's fairly small, but just looks like a poor fit. If you weren't looking right at it (or perhaps if someone pointed it out to you) you wouldn't see it otherwise.
 
Ah, in that case assuming I have the same sort of situstion I may just cut off the "extra" flashing with a dremel.
I don't think that would hurt anything.
 
Oh, I also took a little 600 then up to 1500 sanding on the surface rust in the black area close to the jack holes.
Then I hit them with some flat black Rustoleum.
Looks much better!

Thanks, I really like the look. I missed the little chrome finisher for that grille last night on Ebay. Whole kit NOS in truly brand new condition sold for $12.50 - I was asleep at the wheel so to speak.

I think almost no one will notice this little problem at any speed, just me.
If I find myself holding a dremel with a cutoff wheel attached and standing in front of the car... well I suppose that's the first thing I'll attack.
