Good source for 1275 motors?

I have been keeping an eye out on craigslist for anyone in my 300 mile range having a 1275 or a cheap car with the motor, but no luck so far.

Is there a source for these motors elsewhere that I should check into?

It seems like everyone has one, where are they coming from??

Shipping cant be too expensive.... I have shipPed several motorcycle engines in wooden boxes. What kind of motor are you looking for? Just a pull out or one already rebuilt?

Move your search out to 600 or 700 miles.

These engines haven't been in Spridgets since '74, so there aren't a ton of them around. There are much newer 1275 Mini engines, but Mini engines are fwd and not simple to convert to rwd (need a new crank for one thing).

Be patient. I got two complete 1275 parts cars (one is now drivable with an old 948 in it) for very little money. Both from craigslist.

Otherwise, if you want to up your game call Hap at Acme.
I'm positive he can find and rebuild an excellent 1275 for you.

Otherwise, here's some other vendors (I am not familar with their reputation one way or the other).

Hi Joey,

I know a guy in SoCal that has a good supply and sells them rebuilt. His prices are very good and he ships around the country. Contact me offlist and I will give you contact info.

Shipping ain't what it used to be. I know cause I'm getting ready to ship an engine. Had one shipped to me just a couple of years ago for reasonable but now the monopoly game seems to have gotten into the business. Very few shippers and high prices. Fuel surcharges etc. Recently having parts shipped from England and believe its cheaper to have stuff shipped across the pond than across this country.
I have one in pieces and believe I have all of them but would have to start figuring just what I have so I'm sure you will come up with one.

Kurt.

Thanks guys.. I don't know what is going on with shipping. I bought a lip spoiler for my VW Jetta. It was off ebay from China. I paid $17 for the PAINTED spoiler, with the adhesive, SHIPPED to me from China. How does that work out? I can't even hardly ship a medium sized item from Florida to Cali for that!

Hey, since my engine has "malfunctioned" I too may be interested in a 1275 transplant.. PM sent.

I guess my next question would be about transmissions. Will my 66 transmission work with a 1275 motor?

And, I have a pair of SU carbs on the manifolds for the 1098, would I need different manifolds, or different carbs, or will it bolt right up? What about the other pieces?

Thanks!

Gerard, would you share the "very good" prices publicly?
Or just a ballpark idea of what is "very good"?
I see some California guys selling rebuilt 1275's on Craigslist for about $1800. Is that "Very Good"?

IMHO that would be a very good price. The cost of parts for a proper rebuild would easily exceed that amount, without including machine shop bills or labor. I've sent a message to "the guy" and will PM you Rick, with the price when I find out.

I've done it myself with an MGC engine.
Machine shop costs plus new parts costs and remember this was the mid 80's.
I agree.

Yes, that's the ballpark and Yes!... I would characterize that as very good. Call a couple machine shops and get a quote for the labor, then price the new parts you'd need. ... and then look around and see what cores go for...

You can't build one cheaper than that, even if you already have the engine.

Joey,

Gearbox, carbs and manifolds will bolt right up. You might want 1275 exhaust header or manifold though. The 1098 exhaust manifold will be restrictive on the 1275. All the other ancillaries are interchangeable also. You will need a different clutch kit.

I have a Datsun tranny installed, so I don't need a clutch kit. What I'm going to need is a flywheel for a 1275 that is modified for the Morris Service kit, since the flywheels for 1275s and 1098s are different. ..

OH,....LOOK, .. there in the garage,..

I already have one! .. I had Paul A. get one ready for me years ago, just in case.

The guy has two now. one .030 over and one .040 over.

The guy in KC is on the up and up just hard to deal with. A real grouch!

Bill, have you figured out whats wrong with your 1098??

Kurt.

I don't know what's wrong, but I've wanted to go to a 1275 for quite some time. There was no reason as long as the 1098 worked fine, but this is just the excuse I've needed.

I should be getting a 1275, .030 over, new
bearings , timing chain and cam gear , oil pump , tappets , regrind street
cam , head is magnifluxed , resurfaced , new exhaust valves and springs. He'll sell me a Weber downdraft as well...

I've been saving my money... I'm going for it.

Is he replacing the crankshaft timing sprocket as well. If you replace the cam sprocket and chain you should replace the crankshaft sprocket at the same time. It will be worn and cause early wear of the chain and cam sprocket.
