Continuing our "human interest" series on my local newspaper's (the Hartford Courant) daily website front page. Today is Tuesday, July 1, 2008. And what do we have to inspire us today?

And just to keep things positive ... we also read that Hartford is closing two branch libraries and laying off 40 library staff - while the University of Connecticut admits it spent $170,000 on a one-day welcome party for its new president. And the University of Connecticut has spent over $190,000 to rent and fix up a five-bedroom house near campus for new UConn President Michael Hogan, despite spending more than $1 million to renovate the official president's house up the street three years ago.

Man this all really brightens my day. Are local papers turning into copies of the National Inquirer? Do cars really get better mileage running on only three tires? Inquiring minds want to know!

yeeesh

As a side note - but likely one that applies to many other newspapers in the USA - the Courant just last weekend announced a 25% staff cut.
