T-Series Good day to all, excited new MG TD owner here

I put up the requisite posting for noobs in that section and just wanted to drop over hear and say hi. The TD in question has been sitting for probably 10 years at least without being even started and likely a lot longer without actually being driven. My Uncle thinks it has something around 50k miles on it. The engine should be good as it was just redone not many miles before it was parked. But the tranny....he says it jumps out of 2nd when you let off the throttle so one of the first things we need to do is get into that and fix it. From the searching i've done in this forum it seems a lot of the tranny's end up jumping out of one gear or the other. My question is if there is a real good comprehensive document or web page on the tear down and rebuild for one of these boxes? I have the yellow hard cover manual but wouldn't mind a little more detail. Other than that we'll be going through cleaning the tank and fuel system, full fluid change out, checking the starter and generator to make sure the bearings are lubed and brushes move freely, and completely rebuild the brakes and convert to dot 5 fluid. My goal is to have it running so he can drive it by Christmas 08. While I do have the manual i'll likely be picking the collective brain here for a lot of details. This is pretty exciting as i've not restored a car before, just dozens of motorcycles including some old brit bikes. I do have the whitworth wrenches though and do know my way around engines etc. quite well. Thanks in advance to you all.
 
Remember that while the bolt heads on the engine are whitworth, the threads are metric! I would recommend buying a copy of the Blower manual. Also for the gearbox, see the bottom of this page. I've never read the book myself so I can't say if it's exactly what you're looking for.

I noticed that in some of the documentation I've gone through. Very strange. My Triumph and Norton motorcycles from the 70's both use BSF or BSC type threads, no metric at all. It's all good though as I have a very complete Metric tap and die set just in case.

As for that book, 12 pages. mmmm....it could be what i'm looking for. I guess you wouldn't know until you got it. I'll keep looking on the net to see if there is anything else. I have until April before we go to MD to trailer the car down to FL.
 
Some of the Metric isn't standard, so don't strip anything. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif The engine was actually built on French tooling, which means French metric. Special fasteners were constructed with Whitworth heads so British mechanics wouldn't have to buy new tools to work on the cars.
 
Hiya, lrutt! If you've gone thru a Norton the MG gearbox will be a sideshow. Very straight-forward box. Dropping out of second on throttle off compression usually means you'll be replacing cogs. It ~could~ be worn linkage/fork but only a full tear-down will tell anyway. It should be FUN! I'm *almost* close enuff to say I'll be there for the event. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I was going to mention that David DuBois has lists a plenty in regards to the bolts used on a TD but I see he already beat me to it.

& the list of extra TD parts that I'm compiling that were left over from my '53 restoration has some of them on it - we replaced every nut, bolt, washer, fastener, etc in my car & I bought lots of them in bulk from Moss & have some left over.
 
Welcome to the Forum. I have done that job (many moons ago) and it is actually a fun job. I would plan to replace the link and cogs or do a total rebuild while it is out and open.

Are you going to tranport the whole car to FLA from MD? We could get a couple of us to drop the tranny here and ship it to you in FLA to do the rebuild and then you could bring it back to install and do the other jobs if the car is being returned to MD?

Or maybe just forget it, leave it up here and tell your uncle to sell it to one of us up here, cheap? (just a selfish suggestion) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Nope, the car's new home will be in FL. He moved down here years ago. The car needs some work to be road worthy and he just can't do it these days so that's where I come in. In exchange for me getting the car I have to pay for the restore and let him drive it a few times. Right good deal for me. So we will be taking my truck up with a trailer and bring her down this spring. Lots of good input so far and we will definately be checking out the volusia club.
