I went for a ride to test for a banging noise form the rear as I hit little bumps. Okay, found a small leak in one of the rear shocks. (I guess I'll send them to Apple or some one this great forum recommends - what should I expect to pay to do the pair on an eary BJ8?)
Thats only half of it. While on my ride my baby ran so nice I arrived at breakfast with a grin that would not go away.
Then on the way home I got that surge thing again only worse. It felt like I was down one cylinder with an uneven exhaust sputtering. It went away some at higher speeds. All the usual suspects were ok. I haven't checked the timing yet but the plugs look good and the carbs are very close if not right on. Oil pressure 60. Temp was 180. No oil in the radiator. There seems to be enough fuel in the visable filter. Oil ok in damper. Unfortunatly, I'm leaving for a week of vacation Thrusday and have no time for this.
Any help with either problem to ponder while away? (I will be in internet connection form Mexico). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

TH, I strongly second David K's recommendation. Peter at World Wide Auto Parts in Madison, WI is the best in the business. I purchased 4 rebuilt shocks from him and they are perfect. He rebuilds them with upgraded components and guarantees them not to leak - ever. Also very reasonably priced and excellent telephone support for those trying moments during removal and installation.
 
Banging over bumps indicates loose rear shocks.

Check for oblong mounting holes, weld and redrill.

Banging upon accelleration from a stop indicates worn splines.

Replace both splines and rims.

I do not know about that sputtering bit.However, if you have replaced the fuel pump with a new one you might take a look at the Banjo fittings.On these pumps the pump bosses are not as high as the original ones were.Consequently, the Banjo can bottom on the pump body. Here it is possible that this causes slight misalighnment between the Banjo/Boss and admits a bit of air.This might be the result of heat or mechanical distortion introduced by the cars attitude---???--Keoke.

Yes TH, do both the shocks at the same time. It might be a fuel delivery problem-Old dirty pump or tank???.--Keoke-?
 
Thanks. I'm not in PV yet. I'll be there tomorrow. Wheels are newish. Splines checked out. There is a leak on the right one at the bolts. I figured to do both sides (do I need to?). I will check into the suggested source. The pump is the original (I have never changed it)I beleive and runs strong ( I always carry spare parts for it though). Are you thinking it is a fuel delivery problem,Keoke?
 
Tahoe Healey... If the sputtering goes away at higher RPMs... then my suspicion is either the primary coil lead or that one or more plug wires may be at fault..
 
Don't overlook the coil as the possible source of the problem, especially if it is old/original.

Ed is right... A bad coil could be the problem... Check under the engine to see if there is a pool of electrons dripping from the coil.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
 
I'm wasting time in Pheonix AZ. The flight to PV was canceled due to hurricane John. The coil (6 months) is new form the British Car Specialist. I may need to check the needles in the float chamber too.
 
tahoe Healey.... Just a thought to mull over... IF the problem is in the fuel system, then the engine should quit or run worse at higher RPMs... starving out, as it may be... Let me know what you find. I am very curious... I still suspect the ignition system to be the source of the fault... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

th,i have a set of pro-overhauld rear shocks and front shocks that i could let go for little over what it cost to rebuild them if your interested you can send me a p.m ,i recently got my carbs back after having the throttle shafts rebushed by joe curto in queens n.y. his shop is totaly dedicated to all types of foreign car carbs im very happy with his work, he also has any parts youd need to rebuild just about any carb , this is not an endorsement but simply sharing a pleasant experiance.--www.joecurto.com /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
 
I also think it is an electrical problem.... How old is your ignition condensor ? Unless you have switched over to petronix.
 
I'm to sure about the condenser, three years maybe but less than 4000 miles maybe. I have an extra set in the boot. I'll try it when I get home (asumming I get to PV). I'm now thinking the ignition wires or condenser and possibly the timing since I run adavnced at this high altitude. The wires are touching in a few places. Does anyone use the separators? I will also try the water mist in the dark thing.

HI TH, Now you know what hot is. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Yes I run one separator in my wiring but if you use High quality wires you will not need them.I use it primarily as an alignment bit.My wires are of the performance catagory and use the "O" ring concept for routing so they are run side by side.However, bad wires can easily produce cross firing.You can track that huricane on the net it seems to be picking up quite a bit of steam over the warm gulf region??.-Take Care ---Keoke-AZ- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif

P.S. I have a numbered set of black Packard wires you can have if you want them.They require screw on plug terminals.
 
Well, I'm back. PV was great as usual (we are down there every year at Laborday)Weather was nice and even cool. For sum reason I could not get the Forum to come up down there. I did last year and I got every thing else. Now I have to catch up on my forum reading. I missed you all a lot. One of my British friends down there (now living in San Diego)doesn't think much of LBC's.

I had a chance to check a few things today. Number 6 plug was brownish compaired to the others which were light grey. The wire to the number 6 would not conduct power using a 1.5 volt battery while the others would although at varing degrees. It feels like I'm not firing on one cylinder. I had ment to pull the wires off one by one and hold them next to the plug see if there is a spark but got distracted. (Had to get ready for Eric Burton and the Animals concert---upside is I can nolonger hear the miss fire)
Is there any thing else I can check? Today I checked/re-adjusted the valves, timing, gaps, advance, fluids, dist. cap, roter and more. What is wierd is how sudden it happened.
