Whatever golf’s origins, editors of The Nation argued in 1894 that “the disappointments of the game are conducive to bad language.”
“A Scotsman, who was once singing its praises, admitted that it led to much profanity, and that he, being in the ministry, had had to give it up,” the editors wrote.
“ ‘What!’ said his friend, ‘give up golf!’ ‘No,’ said he, ‘the ministry.’ ”

From The New York Times, June 15, 2017,

Guilty your honour.  though still in the ministry.

Reminds me of that famous scene from Caddyshack... where the bishop is playing golf with a group but it starts to rain. The bishop is having the round of his life and refuses to leave. It gets stormy and he's up to the 18th hole about to break the course record, saying "I'm infallible". When he misses the putt and screams "Rat F*rt" and is struck by lightning. Caddy Bill Murray leaves... The video picks of with the former Bishop in the clubhouse bar.
