Golden Lodge Spark Plugs

I just really looked at the plugs that I had in my 73'B today and found them to be the Golden Lodge brand.
I have been having problems with backfiring, and then the last couple of days it wouldnt even start. I cleaned them up a couple of weeks ago, not really paying attention to the make/brand of what was in the car and they are already fouled again. I have only put about 500 miles on the car in the last 2yrs. (since I purchased it) and was told the plugs were new at the time. So I had no reason until now to really look at them. Has anyone had any luck with this brand of plug? I see they are used for Lancia, Fiat and Alpha Romeros according to the sites I have seen. I have the impression that they dont even make them anymore? Not sure? They have the 4 ground electrodes as you will see in the picture.

Well to make a long story short, Instead of cleaning them again, I just put some Champions in, and the car started and ran as good as it should. Great! But I am courious about this brand. I think the car just needed to get out and run, which I cant at this stage of the restoration. Maybe I will just clean them up again and see what happens.
Anyone else with talk on this plug?

Hello Newkie, Don't miss understand from the name, I drive a Healey and a Vette. but yes your plugs many just be old and worn out. But what also happens especially with an immobile car that is being worked on, the plugs are fouling from maybe a rich carb situation or just alittle rich but you aren't driving it much at sustained higher rpms to get it to burn clean enough to keep from fouling. If you have cleaned them or changed them and the engine is running much better, that is because they have not sooted up much yet. but if they do again, you probably have a tune-up including carbs cleaning and adjusting in the near future.

Lodge (pronounced "Loge"--'g' is "soft") seem to foul in an English engine quite quickly. Never had any luck with 'em in any MGB. Last set I had were in the current ~ALFA ROMEO~ and were deep-sixed for a set of Bosch as soon as I bought the car and got it home. Champion (R)N-9Y(C) are what the B should have. Running an engine at idle repeatedly without getting it to normal operating temp or stretching it's legs with a run of 15 minutes or so will foul plugs with regularity. And it sounds as if your carbs may be set too rich.

I can't imagine anyone going to the trouble of hunting down a set of Lodge plugs let alone putting 'em in a B engine. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

New plugs will make most engine problems clear up for a while. I agree with Vette....It needs to run and blow out a little. Get 'er done and drive it and I bet it will run a lot better. Then tune and adjust it.

You guys have this car pegged. I cant drive it, so yes I start it up and let it run every once in awhile for 15 minutes or so. During the winter I just winterize it and put a trickle on the battery. Not even touching it...
I did put the Champion (R)N-9Y(C) in their, but only because it was all they had? Good enough for now, and it sure did run nice. I will deep 6 those Lodge plugs, and not look back!

Thanks

Just a personal opinion, but I like NGK plugs. They seem to last longer and run cleaner than any other conventional single electrode plug I have tried. Much better than Champs.
Years ago I had a Chevy Nova with a 307 small block in it.
NGKs would last about 12,000 miles, AC about 8-10K, Champs I was lucky to get 6k.
I guess this falls into the category of anecdotal evidence, but I have since not had a whole lot of faith in Champs.

NGK are the third set of plugs I've tried in the GT and so far the best.

Just to express my ignorance...

In all the years that I have worked on cars here on the left coast... I have never, ever heard of Lodge plugs...

Bosch, NGK, AC, Champion,etc... but never Lodge

A regional thing??? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Jeff,

Thanks... Based upon many of the comments... I think I'll stick with NGK.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Best plan. If you ain't got an Alfa you don't want Lodge plugs.

Good to hear they arrived. Hopefully they clean up nice for you.
Sorry I didnt have seperate boxes for each of them, but I trust they got there fine.
Good luck!

Should I prep the several pounds of HL and 2HL old Lodge plugs I've lyin' here for Box??!!!?? Both pink and white.

..I hate to just bury 'em.

The current 1750 gets naught but Bosch plats. "Nevr-Foul" AFAIC. Could never get Lodge plugs to go as long as the Bosch ones.
