Going before the school board on Tuesday

Back a few months ago, our department (IT group for a school district) put together a new salary proposal for ourselves -- because we were all about to top out in our salary range, and folks may start leaving soon.

That presentation was well received, and has been working its way through our budget and HR system. Well, last Friday we got word that we were to present our proposal to the school board on Tuesday. It is a good sign, and hopefully all will go well. We're very prepared, just need to make our case that our group is worth keeping around. It's one of the best groups of folks I've ever worked with -- everyone busts hard and pulls their weight. Hopefully they'll see this and approve our plan.

One way or another we'll know soon. The budget for next year (our fiscal year starts July 1) gets approved in mid June.

Good luck - get ready for other employee groups to fight you.

That's the only negative feedback we've gotten so far (minor in level) is the "can you do this if the other groups don't get something" -- luckily we're at the end of a job study, so there should be something for everyone. Our HR director wanted this connected in with those study results, so it would be part of a larger process. He really liked the plan, so there is hope.

Good Luck and hang in there, Drew!

Well, the presentation went as well as we could hope. The board asked good questions, and seemed to be at least generally in favor of what we are presenting. There is somewhat of a push in government towards some sort of merit-based pay, so our proposal fits in nicely.

We should hear something in a couple weeks. Our budget goes before the board for final approval mid-June, and we're hoping to have our new plan in there. If nothing else, we feel that we made as good a case as we could. So now we wait a bit...

Board voted on Tuesday on our proposal, and it passed! They accepted our proposal as we presented it, proof I think that our hard work to place it properly paid off. All parties involved liked our idea and agreed with our assessment of what we needed in order to attract and keep good people.

A long 3-month process, but a successful outcome!
