Go-kart racing = battered, sore and SMILING!!

I went to the indoor go-kart track this Saturday. Here in Chicago there is a company called Chicago Indoor Racing - www.chicagoindoorracing.com. It is an amazing place! They take walk-ins - called Arrive and Drive - which is what I did. There is an orientation and then you get to go get in the karts. Make no mistake, these are not kiddie go-karts. Top speed is 30-35 mph. You wear driving suits, helmets and neck braces. You slide, spin, everything! I did 7 20 lap "races" which took about 2 hours. Oh am I SORE!! What a workout!! I ache in places that I didn't know I had! I plan on going about every two weeks - I am hooked! I will organize a group meeting if there are enough interested members here. Just let me know - a minimum of 8 is needed.

We have an outdoor track not from Ft. Collins that has rental carts and hosts several cart races. The track is a tight and twisty one mile track and on sections the rental carts can reach just over 50mph. Some of the private carts, some of which are shifter carts, that I have seen there make the rental carts look like pedal cars. The G-Forces you can generate in them is pretty incredible and the ribs do take a pounding from the high sided seats. I can see how you would be sore from your experience. Definitely addictive, I very much agree!

Isn't it fun?!

Our vintage club set up a kart event in February and it was a hoot!

~HERE~ is a video shot from my helmet-cam. The camera angle was set up wrong, but if you watch the first 30 seconds or so, you get the idea.

A *great* way to spend a day!

The red suits and white helmets look like it could be the same company as the one here. Karts look very similar too. Very fun!! There was a guy there who was turning some REALLY fast lap times. I asked him what else did he drive - late models. No wonder he was so fast!

Anyone remember Malibu Raceways on the West Coast in the 70s? Similar but not at challenging as "real" carts. Wanna drool? Get your hands on a Pegasus Racing catalog. They always sell a complete serious cart for racing. If I had an extra 5 grand laying around......

This is what's so great - imho - about Chicago Indoor Racing. For $25 you get a "license" - good for a year and $70 for a 7 race package, they provide the cart, helmet, suit, track, gas, maintenance, etc.... 5 grand will buy a LOT of race time!
