I sometimes use a green laser to polar-align my star tracker when I'm shooting Milkyway pictures. I am always extremely careful that there are no airplanes anywhere near where I'm shooting the laser (at Polaris, usually for less than 30 seconds). I use an app, flightradar24, to check if there are any aircraft that might cross my lasers path.

We did a star gazing trip to Yosemite many years ago and the guide used a laser to point things out.
