TR2/3/3A Girling axle disassembly for shipment

I am looking at shipping a complete Girling rear end to Hawaii, including axle tubes and backing plates/drums.

Wondering if the axle tubes can be taken off the differential to make shipping more compact? It has to be air freight as it's crossing an ocean.

The shipping cost is likely to exceed the cost of the item, but I am trying to minimize cost.

Dan,
Yes, simply a matter of removing the six bolts from the inside of the brake backing plate on each side. Then you can draw the axle shafts out and remove the brake backing plates. But that is as far as the disassembly goes. Be sure to remove the oil from the differential prior to removing the axle shafts. You should mark each axle shaft and brake backing plates as right or left, for reassembly.

Thanks for the reply Charley. So the axle tubes don't come off the differential? If so, I guess I should just leave the axles in the tubes?

That's what you get when you live on an island paradise. I'd ship it intact. The only thing I'd add is that Charlie's right about the oil. Most shippers are pretty fussy about that.

As I recall those tubes are swaged or staked in a fashion that doesn't look like it should be undone nor would it be easily replicated.

In addition to the left and right parts noted, be sure to keep the shims separate and labeled for L & R as they will probably vary in thickness and number.
 
The tubes CAN be removed, but the trouble/cost of having them re-installed would likely exceed the difference in shipping...unless you are willing to tackle the aligning and re-welding to get them back on yourself. I doubt removing the axles and brakes would be worth it either, as you only save a few inches.

Agreed, just leave it intact with the oil drained. Then you don't have to be concerned about shims, right and left parts . You also won't lose any parts if it is one piece.
