Gimme a brake!

So, my emergency brake is meager at best causing me to roll aimlessly through parking lots when I try and start the car. This is especially distressing considering my last post was regarding my brakes going weak under hard braking /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif! Now I'm going through the e-brake adjustment procedure in the Haynes manual, and for the life of me I can't see how this will affect the adjustment of the e-brake /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif. Quote: "Undo the locknut and screw each fork end along the inner cable so as to bring the compensator lever and the handbrake lever tight when pulled onto the fifth notch of the rachet." (sp. ratchet?)Maybe I'm not mechanically inclined enough, but it seems to me that following those steps will lead me back to assembling the brake exactly how it was before. Any enlightenment would be appreciated!

Duh! Okay, after re-reading that a few times I see that the "fork end" is at the other end of the cable (by the wheel) and not by the lever! Maybe I should stick to Legos!

But I'm still confused as to why I had to disassemble as much as I did at the handbrake lever end of things. Why couldn't I just set the arm on the fifth notch and then tighten at the fork end until properly tight? Taking off the carboard cover seemed to serve no purpose at all! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

John, the Haynes manual has worked for me when I placed it atop the jack to avoid scratching the frame. Go get you a Bentley manual and avoid this type of confusion in the future. Working on LBC's is sort of a busman's holiday for us dentists, except they never complain, appreciate everything we do and wait patiently for us to complete the procedure.

Doesn't the TR6 have the square-headed adjustment screw on each rear brake (like a TR4)... or is this just used to for final adjustment?

With the lever released I just tighten that guy until the brake drags, then back off one notch (1/4 turn).

Thats exactly what I did, never had a problem, e-brake works great. Will hold the car on a decent incline to.

Thanks guys! I do need to get the Bentley so I can do less head scratching and more car fixing. And Amen, Bill! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif
