Trying to get new services at the new house I'm closing on next week. The house was built 10 years ago, and seems very modern. Call the electric company, and got the electric service scheduled. Called the gas company, and ran into problems with their high-tech voice activated menu tree. No option for new service! Only options were to report a gas leak, to pay your overdue bill and "more options". When I asked for more options, it asked for my account number. Seemingly no way around that, it just keeps saying "I'm sorry, please try again". Finally hit "0" enough times to get to a live person. They managed to pull up my previous service at the last two places I lived at, and strangely, showed an $8.33 credit which had been around since the year 2000! That was before I moved out of the first place I lived at. No idea why it showed up now. Called the phone company, but the phone company's web application showed no service available for the whole city. Called them up, but they say no service for my new address. Gave them the post office's phone number, since it's a stone's throw from the new house, but they still insist no service. Seems the zone for the nearest exchange ends just before the house, but somehow includes the post office, which was built only 5 years ago. :madder: Wonder what the other 100 or so homes in the development use. Looking at the other major phone companies around, all their web applications show no service for that place. Then I call the water company, and the water company asks me for the previous owner's new address to send the final bill to. How do I know where the P.O. is moving to?? They refuse to let me start new service, even after I point out that if they just leave the P.O.'s name on her final bill, the post office will forward it. No way, there's no gurantee the P.O. left a forwarding address. So, I left a message for the seller's agent to have the seller contact the water company to see about getting her service ended so I can start mine. Seems she already took care of the other utilities; the gas has been off for a few weeks, and the electricity is scheduled to turn off the day of closing. Good thing it hasn't been freezing since the gas is off, but the gas company insists on having to come out to re-light the pilots, even though I can do it.

Dave, you have run into the "beaurocratic mind" again. An oxymoron if ever there was one......

Common sense just goes out of the window for these people, and you know where else you usually find 'em? The DMV!

You have my sympathy.

I hate dealing with utility companies. I've been working for 16 months to get a pole line run to the back of our Oklahoma property. Finally have the work order on the board! With a $5400 deposit, (a 1/4 mile pole line is expensive), they say they'll give me back $2500. when it's plugged in to the building. I still can't figure why I was charged the extra 2500. I guess they like extra paper work? I won't even go in to dealing with the water co. That's another story.

Getting the PO's new forwarding address is not your job, it's the water company's job.
