We get those in Florida all the time. I'm selling my home here and had to sign a "no sinkhole" declaration before I could list it. Hopefully, if it disappears, it will do it after the sale... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

We had one here a few years ago that ate up 2 lanes of I-565.

Now that is a big hole. Yikes.

Maybe it's just my monitor but the pavement looks like aluminum.

Are these things the result of tunneling or something or are they usually natural causes?

Natural and man made things can cause them. If I'm not mistaken, subterranean water flows (hence the natural and man made preface to this reply) erode the earth around it until the surface becomes too weak to support itself and whatever may be on top of it, and the result is the earth suddenly giving way and dropping into itself. These holes are almost always nearly perfect circles, and can be very large (I believe one in FL filled itself in with water to create a circular lake 1 mile across) and can be very deep (I've heard of another in FL , also filled with water, that's 200+ft deep.)

I watched a Discovery Channel program on the 200ft deep sink hole and archaeologists were diving to the bottom to discover various archaeological finds buried in the silt. Incidentally, I think FL has the highest number of natural sink hole occurrences in the US, but I may be wrong.

I've seen a couple of sink holes that were formed from man made 'mistakes' in a man made earthen dam. The piping for the spillway leaked and ate away at the innards of the earthen dam until an 8ft diameter 6ft deep hole suddenly appeared at the top of the dam. Needless to say, we (the residents on the lake) drained the lake and had the dam repaired. After A summer of smelling dead fish as a youth, I still don't care to eat the critters on a regular basis as an adult.

We have many sinkholes in one area of the island.
The largest sinkhole is the Camuy cavern. It is so
huge we ride a rubber wheel train in a spiral road to the
bottom, 400 feet down. Then we enter the cavern itself. Really interesting:

"Only a small part of the complex is open to the public, three crater-like sinkholes and two caves. But what a spectacular part it is! Visitors ride a trolley that descends into a sinkhole lined with dense tropical vegetation while your guide describes the sights. After a walk across ramps and bridges and through the dramatically illuminated, 170-foot high Cueva Clara, lined with beautiful tropical vegetation. Another tram shuttles you to a platform overlooking the 400 foot deep Tres Pueblos Sinkhole. The walls are covered with petroglyphs carved by the ancient Tainos.

The Camuy River is responsible for creating one of the largest cave systems and the third largest underground river in the world. When the Camuy River vanishes into the Blue Hole near the town of Lares, it begins a subterranean journey through one of the most massive cave networks in the world. The river runs through a network of caves, canyons and sinkholes that have been cut through the limestone karst base in this region over the course of millions of years. The caves were probably known to the Pre-Colombian TaĂno indians and later to the local farmers but only came to the attention of spelologists in the 1950's.The Puerto Rico Land Administration developed and opened the area in 1987. Visiting the caves is like being transported to other dimension...
