Getting There - Jamaican Update

Finally got the Jamaican MGA painted and it looks like a totally different car in red than it did in that lacklustre Rockford gold colour. I like the colour - very dark red 50s Italian rather than the later orangey versions.

Next, finish the interior.

Next decision - does it need a spoiler or rather it probably does to keep the nose down at speed, but would it hurt the appearance?

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

It may well help keep the nose down, but the little "chin" air dam showing in the bottom picture should be sufficient. Bottom line is you want to cause the airflow to move over and under the car without using the body as a wing, and that's low enough to do it - and it has a slot to allow airflow up into the engine compartment.

Plus, IMHO, the lines of the air dam in the pic adds to the lines of the car. A "drop-down" air dam may well ruin the really, really nice lines.

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

The original little chin spoiler painted matte black is all you'd want under tghere.

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

Thanks for the update, I had wondered off and on what had happened to the project.

Looks really good and I concur with Tonys comment.

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

I should have been clearer - that pic with spoiler is the product of someone far more skilled than I at Phortoshop - he created it as an example of what it might look like.

I have a TR6 spoiler that looks pretty much like the one in the picture and am just trying to decide whether it would enhance the appearance or not. The choice is that or nothing (wasn't considering a vertical dam - much too modern)

I threw on some old 60 spoke chrome wires with venerable tires to get it down to the body shop (didn't want them to get overspray on my new 6" Daytons) and it has a tendency to spin them on dry road every time I touch the gas. Should be interesting even with only a couple of hundred BHP.

Striking how much resemblance there is to the Datsun 240Z even though the Fiberfab predated that car by a couple of years.

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

Timeless. Maybe I'm just prejudiced, but the 240z seems more "dated" than this. You've got a fine car here.

I like the part where you say "only a couple of hundred BHP." Sorta like saying you're "only driving a Jamaican." /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Dang, I love that car! looking good!

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

Aside from whether or not to put a chin spoiler on it. I also have to decide whether to reinstall the headlight covers.

Somehow the headlight 'pods' don't seem as objectionably large in the new colour - I may just live without them for awhile and see if I like it.

HAVE to get the larger wheels on it though - the ones in the pic look seriously undersized!

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

Oh no, it has to have the headlight covers.

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

yup, you need to get the headlight covers on there.

Here is another vote for the headlight covers, i think they are a must. the car looks great, i love the deep red.

Congrats!

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

OK, OK, I'll put the covers back on and see how I like them!

But I was going to leave the chrome off the rear - now that it is painted it looks cleaner without it.

And I am glad I eliminated those square repeater lights!

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

That exhaust system is purrty, I like the chrome too..but I guess it depends on how it's fastened and if it serves any purpose.

Re: Getting There - Jamaican Update

yep, do not like the lights myself.

However, I would like to see a shot of the rear without the chrome.

The old exhaust was another JC Whitney special - one exhaust tip on each side, one of them a dummy not connected to anything!

I created a new system with a 2.5" pipe ending in a Magnaflow muffler and chrome splitter tip resonator.

I like it! You must get comments on it all of the time when you're out and about...does the car have any badging to denote it as a Jamaican?

Nope. I have resisted the urge to put my spare Lamborghini emblem on it (it was styled after the Miura) and have used knock-offs with the MG on them and have converted back to a stock MGA coupe dash using the radio blanking plate with MG on it - those are the only indications (other than on the engine plenum) that it is an MG. There is nothing at all that would identify it as a Jamaican.

Haven't really had it out much as I am still installing interior.

Man, you can park that at my house anytime.

That plenum looks wicked! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif
