Getting mixture right for emissions test

If the engine runs a bit lean it will run hotter. Running on the rich side the extra fuel acts like a coolant in the chambers and the engine runs cooler.-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

It seems that most cars, Healeys included, run better with a slightly rich mixture. This didn't used to be a problem until the emissions thing came along.

It's entirely possible. The centrifugal advance curve on the distributors starts advancing at a fairly low rpm, like 600 or so. The first part of the advance curve is also quite rapid, so a 200 rpm change, as from 600 to 800 or 1,000, can make a noticeable difference in timing.

I really believe that the timing should be set at what ever maximum you decide on, probably 34 to 38 degrees, at an engine rpm where the centrifugal advance is at maximum, such as 5,000 rpm. Then let the lower speed & idle centrifugal advance fall where it may. Lot of engines have been "hurt" by too much advance at high rpm.

I am going to check my timing again to make certain it is not going too far in advance at high RPMs. Better safe than sorry !
 
this may not be relevant, but just in case, make sure the fast run screws that are if all is correct activated by the choke cable are not turned down too far and keeping butterflies a little open which is why slow run screws can not truly get idle down
 
OH yes it is revelent Why, and it fouls a lot of people up trying to set these carbs. Some engines will require that you share between the throttle disk, the slow runing screws and the fast ones to attain a proper smooth idle.--Fwiw--Keoke

A couple of other little things to look for when adjusting the BJ8 idle: First is to make sure the idle adjusting screws' little rubber gaskets or "washers" are not disentegrated (Moss part number 378-150 at $.90 apiece). Many years ago I was having a difficult time getting the idle speed/mixture correct and discovered that the rubber o ring gasket had cracked on one of the carbs. Also, another BJ8 "difference" is that the carb throttle shafts are sealed with a teflon seal or "bush" that can become worn and air will leak through the throttle shaft openings. These are available and are relatively easy to replace Moss part number 373-025 at $1.35 apiece. Replacing the idle speed screw o ring gaskets and the throttle shaft teflon seals fixed my problems back then.
 
Too all that are wondering, I'm actually waiting to hear back on some Arizona legislation that will not require emissions tests for "classic" cars. If passed, I won't have to worry about this anymore! I'll let everyone know when I find out. Then I'll have to get the car back running how it should be!
 
Well Brandon, it seems that the great fathers in the State of Arizona have decided to exempt from smog certification all Classic / Vintage cars which are 15 years or older. At the worst all cars after 1968 will be smog exempt. So you can quit holding your breath now. Implementation is expected to occur around March 2007---Fwiw--Keoke-AZ-Cow Boy
