Getting HS2 carb jet out

Am working on both of my carbs. I took the screw out of the jet retaining bracket, and removed the tube going to the float chamber. But, on both carbs, when I try to pull the jet down and out, I am not having much luck. Its maybe just stuck from being on there for ages, but I hate to apply too much force without checking to see if there is some other reason. Any ideas?

PB Blaster and wiggle it out.

Did you undo the clamping nut at the float bowl? It usually won't come all the way out unless you do, and there's a potential for damage by trying to do so with the other end in situ.

Yes, I removed the nut at the float bowl and pulled that pipe out.. I can get the jet to turn right and left in place, but it just does not want to come out.

That''s very odd. If you are able to turn it, it should drop right out. I'm assuming you could not lower the jet via the coke mechanism either, correct?

Time for some pix...

It doesn't sound unusual. the varnish builds up just past the normal range of movement. Try a little lacquer thinner and muscle it out.

I've never run into that, and that explanation doesn't make a lot of sense. The jet is is the same diameter over it's length, as is the bearing. The motion is from the bottom, so unless the becoming tapered how can varnish build up enough to change the diameter in one spot? Seems the only "limited motion" would be upward travel? I would think some unusual wear is at play. Please explain.

I can not explain the logic, but I've found several like that. There is a varnish built up around the jet itself towards the top, and also a varnish in the lower portion of the sleeve. When you go to pull it out ... there's interference. I've probably rebuilt two dozen old HS2's and I'd say about 1/4 of them had this issue. Some worse than others.

I've been through about as many over the years, but can only sort of remember only one that might have given me that problem. So I guess common for you, but not for me... maybe it's a "southern" thing... LOL

Thanks for the explanation.

It seems like varnish was the culprit on mine. Used a bit of lacquer thinner to try to soften it up. Then, Joe Curto advised that since I had the carb apart, I could use a 1/4 inch punch to smack it out from the inside. Worked like a charm.

Glad you got it out. Joe knows. I've never had to drive one out, but I guess Joe has seen them stuck much worse. He has surely seen plenty of them.

I just shoot them with a bit of PBlaster, grab the plastic part in the vive and rotate them and give it tug, it's just corroded in there, and you getting new ones, so it no big deal if you mess the old ones up in the voice, I also has to use a dowel punch, and knock them out.
