Getting hot in the car [AH3000mk3]

Hi, well this is the first question, of probably many to come

I got my BJ8 two days ago. There are some things that don't work in the electrics. The panel lights dont work, the washer fluid doesn't spray - the radio, the heater/fan doesn't work either.

I don't have a clue how to fix all this, but I have to start somewhere, and that is with the heater i think, since it gets very hot inside the car when I'm driving. I don't know where it's coming from. I feel hot air streaming from the clutch gasket (when I hold my hand on the clutch knob). Sometimes more, sometimes less. But it feels that if it was just that, it could not heat up the inside that much. I mean, I'm sweating while I drive with the top down... It also gets a bit hot next to my right leg (from whats underneath the carpet). But it's not THAT warm, so it couldn't cause this heat i think.

Anyone have a clue what could cause the heat?

The first think to be aware of is that Healeys do get hot inside. I assume the engine is not overheating and is working normally. One thing you can do is stop the water flow to the heater by closing the tap on the engine block on the right hand side, near to the bulkhead. The heater controls themselves are confusing. The hot air flow is cut off by pulling out the knob not having it pushed in. Cold air flow is also activated by pulling out the air flow knob. So for no heat and cool air both knobs should be pulled out.

Regarding the electrics. You need to acquire a good wiring diagram. Look on e-bay, there are some full colour versions in larger formats that some people are producing that are much better than the the one in the workshop manual. Its then just a question of testing the wiring circuits until the faults are found. Its actually not as difficult as it might appear.

The air that flows from the enginebay and transmission under the car is very hot.
I experienced the same when I got my mk3. After a week I noticed that there was no plug in a hole.

Just under the dash on the transmissioncover there is a cross cut in the carpet. Under that cross cut you will either find a plug or a hole. If the plug is missing buy one for a few bucks and it will lower the temperature.
(the hole is get access to the oilcheck for the transmission).

All other holes in the transmission cover will also spit out very hot air if they are open :smile:. So the oil check hole, transmission stick and handbrake all punch through the cover.

Ah ok, good to know that they are hot inside per default:smile: I will try to cut off the hot water like you said Derek. If I may ask a question about the heater/fan; should it be startable when ignition is on?

I do have a wiring diagram over the electrics, but it looks like jibberish to me, but I will try to learn. Right now the electrical system is a total mess with lots of cut off cables. There are some relays that don't even have cables connected, and I have no clue what they are for. How do I check the cables and circuits. Do I have the ignition on while testing? (sorry, I'm very new to this).

Thanks hoefnix! I will definately check if that hole has a plug! That definately adds to the heat. Sometimes it streams more and sometimes less. It might be depending on the speed.

Danne, there are a lot of Healeys in Sweden and a lot of people who know Healeys very well.. If you have Facebook contact Anders Pettersson who knows Healeys better than most. he can help you..
